Image the image processing a Cell can do if that is all it has to do.

I wonder how the yield is on Cells, I wonder how many chips Sony has to dispose of because of malfunctioning SPE's, could be put into TVs

The artical does mention Toshiba having a hand in the cell technology. They also mention that they never really did anything to use the technology until recently.

Depending on which company/disc group (lol) you're rooting for, this can be seen both ways in terms of um, goodness. I wish we had a lot more information on this subject...

When millions and millions of CBEs end up in consumer electronics and supercomputers, Toshiba is going to start making some mad dough.

There will probably be an illegitimate love child born from this sale and the outcome of the HD-disc war: A Cell-equipped Blu-Ray player!

Do you guys think the build quality of the Cell and Rsx will be the same as if the plants were in Japan?

The build quality will be generally the same. They either work or do not. The yields may differ though. However, Taiwan, Malaysia, and China do have experience with semi-conductor manufactoring. Go check where your Northbridge, Southbridge, GPU, RAM, Sound Processor, and CPUs are mostly made.

"Yield" is generally expressed as a percentage and it's simply the ratio of working chips to chips built in a batch or, in the industry, an average of many batches.

One Cell SPE is disabled in the PS3 simply because that way you can use the Cell processors that come out of manufacturing with one broken SPE.
