Installing XP on SATA Drive

Thread Starter
Is there anyway to do this? I just re-installed Vista, left some free space to dual boot XP only to find that the XP install won't recognize my SATA hard drive, I have to install third party drivers when setup starts via floppy...but I have no floppy drive. I read about another way to include the driver on the XP disc, but I wouldn't know where to get the drivers from, Dell's website has some hard drive drivers but I'm not sure they are the right thing since I've never had to install drivers with a hard drive. This whole re-installing Vista and dual booting with XP has been nothing but problem after problem so far. Any help would be appreciated.

You MUST install xp first and then Vista. Vista's boot loader will take it from there.

If you try and install xp 2nd, Vista get angry!

Maybe Partition Magic?

I don't think you guys understand, are you saying that if I didn't have Vista installed first, then XP would recognize my SATA drive? I don't think it makers, my drive is always going to be SATA and Windows XP setup will never recognize a SATA drive...thats what I thought anyway.

Sounds pretty crazy ha? I thought I was going 'tarted the first time I tried it.

Even if you do manage to get it on there, I've not heard of one person that's dual-booted correctly when installing in that order.

vista partition is different from xp hience why xp can not see it
post #7 of 22

I have 2 partitions...one has Vista on it, the other is unallocated space thus far for XP. And it is possible to install XP after Vista, you just need to run a Vista startup recovery after XP is installed. After further reading, I have confirmed that XP will NOT install on a SATA drive regardless of Vista being on the same system. You need drivers provided by floppy or slipstreamed onto the disc, I'll just have to find the SATA drivers for my Dell drive...

This isn't true at all. I've installed xp on many sata's and the only thing I've needed the floppy or a slipstream is for RAID drivers.
