WD 500GB External (delay write failed) HELP !

So, having just posted my need for a nice external hard drive, I went and picked up the WD 500GB MyBook external. Thread here :

http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives...rive-need.html

Now even though my computer is quite old (heck, Im still running USB 1.1 lol), the thing worked perfectly until today. I started moving stuff onto it like crazy. After getting to about 110GB full, it is now displaying this error when plugged in :

*********************
Windows - Delayed Write Failed

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F:\\$Mft. The data has been lost. Please try to save this file elsewhere.
********************
I am running XP SP2, and this just started. I remember being in the middle of transferring a file when it happened the 1st time. I unplugged it, and try'd it on my girlfriends laptop. She is running Vista. The thing is perfect. No error's, and I ran chkdsk to make sure and it came back 100% ok. I dont get the popup balloon at all even after leaving it in 30+ mins.

I tried restarting, a new usb cable, plugging it into a new usb port, and nothing. The drive appears fine, and I havent lost any data at all. Unfortunatly, nothing works when I click on it (when hooked to my comp that is). I have the drive plugged in, but not accessing anything, than after a minute or 2, that balloon pops up with the error. If I try to 'safely remove the device', I get some weird 'drive is corrupted, please run chkdsk' error. As stated, the drive is fine tho when I use it on the laptop.

I have no idea what this error means, or why all of a sudden it started when it was working perfectly. The drive is only 2 days old !!!

Anyone ... someone .. please tell me how I can fix this. I want to enjoy my new 500GB drive again !!!

From MS:
1.In Windows Explorer, right-click your hard-disk, and then click Properties.
2.Click the Hardware tab.
3.Click the hard disk, and then click Properties.
4.Click the Policies tab.
5.Click to clear the Enable write caching on the disk check box, and then click OK two times.

I have never personally had that error.
What size is the file that you were trying to write? What file system is the drive?

Thanx for the response.

I unplugged everything yet again, tried yet another usb cable, and tried another different port (my last one). The drive has now gone back to working correctly. It doesnt seem to be accessed when Im not doing it myself. I transferred more files to it, and its fine. No pop up balloon or write delayed error. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays like this.

I was in the process of moving a 700mb avi file to it. The drive came FAT32, but I quickly made it NTFS as I remembered I often make dvd iso's which are 4gb+ so if I needed to save any, Id like to be able to.

I checked the properties tab, and it indeed is turned on (checked). However, since its back to working ok again, Im going to leave it checked since that would make it work more efficiently (correct?) ... If I encounter the error again, I'll try un-checking it.

Its been stable about 3 hours now .. far, far longer than the usual 2 minutes before crashing I was experiencing earlier.

Thanx !!
