[HD PROS] Possible to use these two drives in an array?

Thread Starter
WD4000JSRTL and a WD3200KS hard drive. One is 400GB and one is 320GB.

If I tried to RAID these, would I still be able to use the other 80GB for other things by partitioning the 400GB? Is it even possible to RAID them?

Yes, but I am talking about:

1. Even though they are different models numbers and cache sizes (8 and 16) would it be possible to RAID them, and would there be a performance hit because of the differences?

2. Will that remaining 80GB of the 400GB drive left over from the array be able to be used?

From my understanding, the "extra" 80 will be unuseable (may be a way around this?), and they will both preform @ 8mb cache.

Maybe partioning? 320GB and 80GB partition?

Need some HD experts for advice

I know they will perform at 8MB cache, but I assume RAID0 will still be worth it?

blu has it right as creating the array comes first then partitioning by which time the program will only see 600GB in a raid-0 array 300gb in a raid-1 array
post #7 of 19
umm raid-0 the drives must be the same size and speed?

For instance, if I wanted to partition 320GB for the array with my currenty hard drive, 40GB to backup my old computer, and 40GB to install Linux, would that be possible or no?

no they can be different sizes but the larger drive will be limited to the capacity of the smaller driver so the 400Gb would only have 320Gb of usable space but after converting 1GB=1000MB as the manufactors use to 1GB=1024MB that everyone else uses you get 298Gb x2 for raid0 and you get total usable space of 596GB

no as you need to create the array before partitoning once you get to the partitioning part the 80GB will be unseen and unusable
post #10 of 19
you what your saying, is that i throw my old 80gig drive in with my 200gig drives and make a raid-0 out of that but i would be limited to the smallest drive? *** bother?
