Steam and CSS issues in Ubuntu 7.10

Alright I have 2 problems here. This is on my desktop sig rig. I installed 32 bit ubuntu 7.10. I installed wine and steam installed fine. However, I can't type anything to anyone over steam friends. I can bring up the chat box, but I can't see myself typing anything, nor do I get any messages back. Second problem.......... I can't install nvidia drivers. I downloaded the proper ones from nvidia.com and whatnot. I typed "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run" into the terminal and it says it can't open it

Help please! I just want steam to work and for me to be able to play CSS is all.

Also, under appearance preferences, I can't change visual effects. It will not change from none to normal or extra, it just stays on none. Which is weird since my way old laptop can manage extra setting.

If you're using Ubuntu, install graphics via Envy or Restricted Drivers (most people recommend one over the other; I just can't remember which one is the recommended method.)

I don't know about the steam problem, though. I'm hoping I won't have that problem since I just got CSS and am going to install it on Linux.

If graphic drivers are not installed, desktop effects won't work. You also want to install something called compiz-settings-manager and/or compiz-gnome or something like that. I hope someone can elaborate on that, because I'm sure the names there aren't exactly correct.

the envy method is the most user friendly way to install the nvidia video driver

+rep to both of you. The video drivers installed and I can use the fancy pants graphics now. I'll update you in a bit as to how steam goes.

EDIT: I can see myself typing in steam friends, but it doesn't show up in the chat. Something's up.

yea, that part is getting frustrating. the game loads fine, and I'll join a server, but it will freeze right as soon as I get in the server.

Ok this is getting really ugly. I ran the CSS video stress test and got an average of ~50 fps....... in windows I got an average of ~270. ***?
