installing the drivers from nvidia.com usually mess up for me and i dont know why, i always end up just using the restricted drivers that come up automatically in ubuntu then, with internet connection, apply them and reboot. i can play css just fine with that driver.

Edit: double post

But that doesn't shutdown X, does it? X is what the driver program is looking for to be closed before proceeding. I'm positive I've tried to stop gdm before, and that didn't work. Before the introduction of Envy, Linva, and Suse's 1-Click Install, I was never able to get video drivers installed manually.

you need to <ctrl><alt><F2> first, then login then issue those commands. then after restarting it, it should bring you right back into the boot screen. if not just hit <ctrl><alt><F7> to go back in.

I've given up on running anything steam related in ubuntu (for now, hint hint 8.04 )

I'm gonna buy a second 36Gb raptor to put vista/xp on it. I'll still use ubuntu as my main though. Now hmm. Buy vista for a couple hundred for retail or borrow it from ms using a program that lets you share the internetz. Such a hard decision

(please don't comment on piracy, I don't want this to turn into a discussion of that sort)

For the text not showing up in chat
You need to add fonts from a windows machine to
the wine font folder.(somewhere in install folder)
copy the windows/font i dont really know where it is but
once you do that i think i should work.

Could also be graphics card or settings in linux

That's exactly how I feel... Linux does 90% of my stuff; how is windows worth $400 (or $250 upgrade)?
piracy + overclock.net = BIG ISSUE lol. so its best kept undiscussed. but yeah, a seperate partition/hard drive is always good for a windows install for games and what not. other than that, linux all the way!

so you are giving up on steam in linux because of steam chat/friends? should just tell your friends to get teamspeak and then host a server from your house if you have an extra computer or a good connection (free download on teamspeak website), besides, they have a linux version that works just fine. other than that, xfire works but has some problems (cant see peoples names, but if you hover your mouse over them you can see who they are and if they are playing). dont give up yet! linux will prevail!

Please stop saying that windows costs that much, the OEM of x64 Vista is only $110 for the Premium version, which is all anybody ever needs.

No no no, I'm giving up on css in ubuntu because of performance issues. I lost about 1/2 my fps. I can't really blame that on ubuntu though, and I'm not. It's valve for not making it linux compatible. They just need to be made aware that there is a linux audience that would love to have a linux compatible steam and steam games that don't require an emulator that drastically cuts performance.

And ducky, that is OEM. I'm a complete motherboard whore, so I would have to buy a lot of oem copies. But let's not let this turn into a linux vs windows thread.
