It's just like minimum (Basic) and recommended (Ultimate) requirements for Crysis. Technically my brother's computer can run Crysis (Pentium 4 2.8, 9800 Pro); would it play it at max settings? HELL NO!
When it says it's capable of running Vista it means just that, you can install it and it will function; whether you can use the best OS (Ultimate) to it's full ability (with all the eye-candy) is a whole nother story. I agree, Microsoft should have specified Vista Basic for the complete noobs but it should be an open a shut case for a giant like Microsoft.
I did notice alot of computers, namely my Gateway, were marketed as being a "Windows Vista Premium Ready PC". This is explained here at Microsoft's website.

Yes. Windows Vista is the first Windows operating system with a user experience that adapts to take advantage of the capabilities of the hardware on which it is installed.

All Windows Vista Capable PCs will be able to run at least the core experiences of Windows Vista.

All Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs can deliver even better Windows Vista experiences, including the new Windows Aero user experience.

Maybe in the future when people buy a computer they should pay a little more attention to the side of the box, particularly the specification list! A computer is most definitely not a computer!

Mmm... That's a good analogy. But... For HD stuff, there do exist "Full 1080p" stickers and other such categorizing labels. For vista, there is only one single "vista capable" sticker. In that case, we should assume it is the full vista and not the crippled vista.

and then there are tv's that don't have that sticker. but the fact is vista basic, home premium, business, and ultimate can run on any computer as long as the computer meets the requirements. then that falls into the user's hands for not getting a strong enough computer to run all versions. instead they can only run the lower end versions of vista but it still is vista.

Unless the courts Claim that the Sticker means ALL versions of vista. Then that would be different. But technically Vista Compatible laptops can run a form of Vista which is Home Basic
what are you talking about mine runs just fine. i put in 2 gigs and overclocked from the 1.8 amd turion dual core to about 2.4. vista ran smooth as silk, of course i used vlite to help compact vista.

the keyword is overclocked and upgrades. they are mostly talking about people who bought a laptop with a decent video card but only 512mb(minimum for vista) to run.

Why do OCN users not compare themselves with the people who can't overclock and what not? The people who do the complaining are the people who only know how to turn on a computer and thats it. so overclocking and vlite isnt a valid argument since these people can't do anything more then press the power button.

plus i didn't say they have to run basic. i said they can form of vista and home basic is a form of vista which fulfills the claim of the sticker

technically i wasn't really OC my laptop. for some reason it would clock to 2.4 and stay like that. secondly, i already had 2 gigs from my other laptop so, i might as well put them in the new one. it's not my fault people just don't know how to use vista correctly.

im not saying its your fault. but these people get a laptop with a vista sticker on it saying that there laptop can run it at the specs it was shipped at. and technically their laptop does run vista cause it met the minimums factory shipped. now if it runs like crap, thats on them but it runs it regardless

Sounds kinda Dumb IMO, sure all PC's are Capable of running Vista, with a few upgrades that is, kind of like saying my car is capable of getting 1000hp, just have to add a few Bolt ons
