DVD Copying software?

Thread Starter
If this is against TOS...please delete this thread mods. I'm assuming what I'm attempting is 100% legal, I just don't know how to do it.

Ok...I USED to be able to copy my movies just fine years ago. But after Pixar started using better copyrights, I can't do it anymore. My dilemma is as follows:

I have quite the nice library of DVD's...purchased legally by myself or my parents mind you, that are all in my possession at my own home. I'd like to be able to make a backup copy of these movies since a few of them can't be read in my DVD player anymore. Preferrably even shrink them to a 4.3Gb DVD if possible. But a lot of these movies are the kids type movies such as Pixar and Disney....and I know these have better copyrights than normal because they always fail with my older software. Can somebody point me in the right direction here? Again...I assume its perfectly legal for me to make a backup of my own legally bought DVD's, right? I'm not wanting to sell them or anything. I promise. If I were to sell even one of these burned movies...I will withdraw my profile here at OCN...and that's a HUGE deal to me.

So with all that being said...can anybody help me out? And if this is illegal for me to do (it'd be very stupid if it is), please feel free to let me know. Let's not have 50 different posts though that say, its illegal you fail! Thanks guys.

If you are making backups of movies that you currently own, it is not illegal!
Isn't that the exact same thing Killa?

If you back them up, lose the disk, and make a new one, you made a copy of the original...

Damn these weird copyright laws...but eh, gotta live by them. Run from the RIAA/MPAA.

Well then seriously.....what is legal to do with your own DVD's? Just watch them and that's it? What happens when they get destroyed and you can no longer watch them? What that means I have to go down and spend ANOTHER $20 to buy another copy of the same movie that I already own? I don't think so! If that is illegal to do....well that's just stupid. I mean you've already bought and paid for the movies once already....why would you have to pay again?

That's like going to the theaters. In the middle of the movie you have to pee, but to get back in you have to pay again. Don't argue with me, its the same thing. Peeing in the middle of a movie sometimes needs to happen. Same thing with discs gettings scratched....it happens.

Wow, paranoid much?

It's not illegal to make a back-up of a DVD you already own.

I recommend using DVD-Shrink to do it, it'll also reduce it to fit on a 4.3Gb DVD-R and strip all copy protection.

Here's a download link, it's freeware.
