new build

Thread Starter
I have been searching and reading for a few weeks now. Want to keep this under $700 for sure and cheaper is better to an extent. My first build is an amd 3000 (stock), 1 gig ram, 1950gt agp, XP. Will be used for gaming. Game of choice is IL2 1946 (95%), and recently purchased Armed Assault. My goal is to improve IL2 even more and allow for play of newer games (not on full detail). I do play at 1600 x 1200. Plan to do bigger upgrade/complete rebuild when IL2 Battle of Britain is released (fall 08 +- 2years). I have not OC'ed before, but have been told its the way to go =).

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 $79
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Allendale 2.2GHz 124
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 $89 w 25MIR
Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600AAJS 160GB $49.99
MSI NX8800GT 512M OC GeForce 8800GT 512MB $219 w20AR
newegg: $564.95 before 45MIR

Already ordered thru buy.com
CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W $53AR

1. I have seen some suggest going with e2180 (i believe) due to cheaper and OC.

2. Ram: how much of benefit is 1066 vs 800 ddr2.
3. Seems vpu prices will be changing. that may change my selection. but the 8800gt performs better than others at 1600 x 1200.

thanks for looking.

1. Ya, the e2180 would be a better fit for a bargain dual core.
2. 1066 Ram will give you more OC headroom and is a good choice because it is relatively cheap these days. Wish I had it.
3. The 8800GTS 512MB is better and almost as cheap as the 8800GT now.

about RAM, speed is better than timing; 1066 is better than 800 4-4-4-12.

for the gfx card, the best 8800 GT is the xfx 8800gt alpha dog xxx edition but it's 300$. however the core is 670 mhz and can be oced to 700-720. Stock 8800 are 600 mhz. If I remember correctly, a high-clocked 8800 gt was as fast as a gtx

1) the e2180 is a mean overclocker, I say go with it. (and save 40$)

2) RAM doesn't honestly make that big of a difference, you'll never feel the difference between DDR2. Go with the DDR2 Ballistix (they'll probably hit 1066 5-5-5-15 anyway) another 20$ saved. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146565

3) The 8800gt is a great card, but I recommend taking that 60$ you just saved, and getting an 8800gts 512 instead, 10-15% faster (and better cooled). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130325

how challenging will it be to overclock the e2180 vs what can be achieved with e4500 (ive read the term easy OC vs hard OC)
