I'd just check for cable internet. Every cable company i've ever dealt with will do month\\month with a little arguging (no i don't want tv, no i don't want tv, no i don't want tv, RIGHT i just want internet).

DON'T go with Clearwire! Or any ISP that makes you sign a contract for that matter. I will NEVER make that mistake again. Once you're in a contract, they'll do everything they can to give you baaad service and make you pay the early termination fee. Heck, even if you "overuse" the internet, they'll terminate you early and still charge the early termination fee, and the contract lets them do that! Then they have extra cash plus room to sign up another unsuspecting customer. It's just wrong...

So yeah, do all you can to get a monthly service plan. DO NOT sign a contract! You WILL get screwed over!

SBC/AT&T tried to charge us $250 for canceling 6 months early, until we had some choice words for them.

ISPs will often drop the cancellation fees, just be kind, explain the reasoning, and resist the urge to yell at them.

Thanks for the help everybody, hopefully I can find a month-by-month provider just to make things easier, and hopefully I don't have to cash in my leg to afford it, I need a quad and vid card this summer after all

The only problem with a monthly plan is you may have to buy the modem from the ISP up-front instead of adding it to your bills. Some places just rent the hardware so try to find one of those.

I told him that I had seen availability on the website and that I had talked to a rep a couple of days earlier who informed me that the service was indeed available in my area. He replied that the website sometimes makes mistakes and the lower tier reps sometimes use the site to check for availability so they can also be wrong sometimes. I told him to just disconnect my service from my other house, to which he had the balls to tell me that I would be charged a $200 early termination fee. I told him where he could put his fee and hung up on him.

That has been a little over a year ago and I haven't seen a $200 fee yet.

Edit: forgot to mention...as of today I'm no longer an AT&T customer. It's actually cheaper for my wife and I to both carry cell phones and we have wireless internet so I had no need for a government tapped land line anymore

Now just your net and cell phones are tapped

That's great though, telling him off. We got put in before they made the zones smaller, I believe the guy who came out during the disconnects said that we were 22,000 feet from a hub station. Talking to the rep on the phone, she said that AT&T no longer offers services to people that far from the hub.

It's kinda odd that they didn't just build another hub closer, I used to live in a fairly rich suburb... I'm sure that they would have gotten business. Or many everyone (smartly) was on cable.

heh that's why I specified land line. If they want to find me and listen to me, they won't have to work hard for it. I've got nothing to hide, but the arrogance of AT&T is just unreal. I know everything I say on the phone or do on the internet eventually passes through an AT&T trunk so it's really no different, but this way I'm not paying them directly. Besides that, I knocked $30 off my monthly bills by buying a second cell phone.

Yeah, I don't even use a land line anymore, cell phones are the way of the future for all home phone calls. Businesses might keep land line around, but a lot of people are seeing how much money they can save with a cell phone plan and no hard line.

I think the only thing good about Charter (my ISP), is there are no traditional "contracts", and you may cancel your service in any 1 month interval. I'm not sure how many ISP's out there do this though.
