E6400 Overclock Fail

Thread Starter
I must admit that I've just decided to rediscover Overclocking. I have had my CPU running stably at 3.2 Ghz for several months now. Temps never exceeded 48-49 max. All in all I was quite satisfied. But a couple days ago I had a bios reset when I shut down for the evening. Now I can't get anything beyond the smallest of overclocks. I have tried bumping up the voltage a bit, but as I am air cooled I didnt' want to push that too far. Is it possible for a CPU to just simply loose it's oc ability?

Mind you the thing still runs fine at stock settings...so I don't think the CPU has failed completely.

Yes, but not under about 1.5V and if your temps are fine.

Honestly I was sitting at 1.33125. Just barely had to increase voltage to hit 3.2. I was really happy with that. But I've been tinkering with it today and can't get it to get past booting with any OC now. I did hit 2.6 but on reboot he thing hung and it bumped back to 2.13.

Did you update BIOS any? You would be surprised how much the BIOS matters in these cases. They can determine an OC as much as many other things.

wow I had to go to 1.4475v to be stable at 3.2 but maybe the 4mb L2 is the difference in the chips and their OC'ability?

definately try flashing your bios to the latest, then clear the CMOS and try again.

You may need to remove the battery on the mobo, and hold that reset jumper down for about 30-50 seconds... My DS3R gets stuck in power savings mode when I overvolt the cpu too much, and it's a ***** to get it to snap out of it...

Try removing your memory, powering on with the memory out and some crazy things like that... It will go back to normal, you just have to ***** slap it.

Edit: I had the 965 S3 with an E6400 as well, and it did some stupid crap like that every once in a while. But usually when I was pushing it... It would get stuck, wouldnt boot even after bios reset... One time had to remove the CPU and put it back in to get it to post...

I'm fairly certain that I have the newest bios for my board. I will try resetting the bios. I'll also try bumping the voltage up a bit more as well.
