2x 8800GTX Dual-slot cooling on air suggestions? - Page 2

Hmm. So the DuOrb is out, as if I'm going to change anything, I want substantially better cooling.

Nobody knows of a dual-slot sized cooler that's any good for GTX's at all? That would be a shame...

Maybe I'll be looking at water sooner than I had planned.

I'm not completely rulling it out at this point, like I said I have some air-flow problems where I'm pushing hot air directly on to the front and backside of the GPU on my video card and I'm sure that's not the best possible configuration...

However, after much exhaustive research everything I've found regarding a DuOrb on a G0 GTX or ULTRA has provided equal to or worse than stock cooling results... and I'd bet money that the reason for this is that the GTX and ULTRA editions have an IHS over their chipsets. Apparently it's the first video card to introduce an integrated heat-spreader over a GPU... and with the IHS being about 1.5x the size as the DuOrb's surface, it could be _the_ contributing factor.

And if you're thinking about pulling it off, because *I* am thinking of trying to pull one off, keep in mind that after two weeks of forum hunting for feedback regarding the removal of the 8800 GTX's IHS I've only managed to find one guy who's done it successfully and more than a dozen who've killed their cards.

------
Still, I'm not giving up yet, the DuOrbs give me more room between my two cards and it's a precious commodity for me so I'm really hoping to find a solution. We shall see...

Well, I actually found one review where they got about 20 degrees off load with a DuOrb compared to a stock GTX. Link: http://www.xtremecomputing.co.uk/rev...?id=380&page=5
Though I am obviously not going to buy on the basis of one review. Actual experiences are far more valuable to me.

And I'm really not looking to kill my cards, so there absolutely no chance of me pulling off the IHS.

When I only had a single 8800 GTX in on the DuOrb I was having temps in the low 40's on stock speeds as well. It was only when I put the second card in that the temps jumped up...

The thermalrights require 3 slots with a fan mounted (in front position). You won't be able to back mount because of the nb on the top card and your sound card above the bottom card.

considering that my 8800GT at stock actually ran hotter than my 8800gtx (I had two in SLI for both) ever did, I have trouble believing the duorb cant handle it.

My 8800gtx's never exceeded 70C whereas my 800GT's both went past that under load.

Certainly the 8800gtx has a dual slot cooler over the single slot but its a crappy dual slot cooler to begin with.

I'd try the Zalman VF-1000 + RHS-88 combo, guaranteed to work in SLi configurations.

I totaly forgot about the VF-1000. If it mounts to G80s it should do pretty well. It's certainly small enough to fit the space constraint.

Also, I should probably metion that my G80 8800GTS didn't have a heatspreader when I had the DuOrb on it. I cut it off.

I went back to the stock cooler after I ground it down enough to fit correctly with no heatspreader.

I don't think the heatspreader would have harmed the DuOrbs performance. From what I've seen, the weakness is the heatpipes, not the base, and not the heatspreader.

If you actually read the review, they report their temperatures as difference with the ambient. I think they had about 20 degrees ambient there, so that would make the reported temps actually 41° idle stock and 40° idle duorb, and 80 load stock, 61 load duorb. Still, it's just about the only report I've found on the entire web that says the performance on GTX is significantly better then stock, so I'm still taking it with a grain of salt.

Yeah, I found these last night as well. The reviews I've seen are only getting a few degrees temperature drop, up to 5 or so at most. And for 45 ponds per card (80 dollars) for the heatsink and cooler, I'm not sure that's entirely worth it.

VF1000 and RHS-88 all the way, you will not regret it. Believe me, my card is idling at 55 and full load never higher than 70 with ambient case temp at 37 all the time. It's F#$%^ hot here is South Africa.
