Need Help OC Q6600 - Page 2

Yes, download coretemp and get the VID. That will help all of us help you as we know how good of a chip you got.

My vid is 1.3125 and it was very very difficult for me to overclock to 3.6 without going over 1.5v - in fact I can't get it 100% stable in orthos at 3.6 for more than 4 hours.

So get the VID and lots of help to follow.

Thanks guys, I couldn't get 3.4Ghz stable because of my ram so I went for 3.6Ghz (400fsb x 9) and that seems to be stable. According to coretemp my VID is 1.2500v and it is idling at about 34 C. It seems stable but I only stress tested for a little bit. Think my cpu cooler can handle 3.6?

Your zalman can definitely handle more. I've been trying for 4GHz lately and found that even at 1.5V my Q6600 never breaks 60C on load @3.6-3.8GHz with the fan on low. I say go for it!

sounds good, the only setting I really mess with though when overclocking is v core, should I be playing with the other ones too? or do they not make much of a difference?

Yea, VTT and VFSBT can make or break a quad OC from what I hear. I have not yet played around with them yet. Also the AI transaction booster and clock twister can be vital to getting a great OC- but I have not tried them either. I'll be testing out these settings as I try to venture past 3.6GHz.

I was able to do 3.4 on my system with a core voltage of 1.344 (I believe bios sait 1.375 or something like that) - I'm using the Maximus Formula also. One thing that I have noticed though is that my NorthBridge gets quite hot. I'm thinking about pulling the heatsinks off and re-applying thermal paste, as I've heard that the thermal paste that comes with the Maximus Formula isn't the greatest. Right now, I'm kinda limited by my HSF (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro). If your cooling is sub-standard, I would look at investing in a new HSF also.

Yes i have read the nb gets hot, my cooling seems alright though my temps on load are at about 60 C.

60C won't hurt the X38 (90Cmax) and probably does not hinder stability. My NB runs around 50C on full load (400FSB/1.5V), although I did reseat with AS5.

Be careful taking your cooler off if you do. ASUS used an epoxy based TIM so it sticks on tight- one guy pulled his NB off the PCB. You can try to apply heat/cold to make it easier (carries some risk of damage to the board), I just gently and firmly giggled it off. Check out my Maximus overhaul thread to see pics and get tips on removal.
