First attempt at OC E6300

Thread Starter
Hello everyone. I have put off for too long trying to learn to overclock and I am now to the point of just going off and doing it! So first of all here are my system specs:

Core 2 Duo E6300 w/artic silver paste applied
Asus P5N-E SLI
Nvidia 7800gtx 256mb
ddr2 6400. 3g (2 of those sticks are 6400 and the other one is 6400c4)
PSU SUNBEAM 550W
Antec P180B
Artic freezer pro 7 heat sink

running on winxp pro 64.

So I looked at my BIOS and viewed some of the settings. Here is what I found:

cpu multiplier: 7
limit cpu max value: diabled
enhanced c1 (c1e) disabled
execute disabled bit: enabled
virtualization technology: enabled
enhanced intel speedstep tech: disabled

under the advanced > jumper free config:
system clock > NB> PCIE Freq: 100

I will post some more info in a second. I just have to go back and forth between the BIOS. My main goals is to take the cpu to 2.0 ghz. Hopefully this can be achieved with air cooling. All suggestions are appreciated. I read most of the guides and am just now going to start tweaking. I am more of a hands on type of guy anyway. Thanks everyone!

so should I increase the Northbridge Frequency?
Also, I get the option to either choose the FSB memory clock mode to be a)auto b)linked or c) unlinked.
Which one do I choose?

wow carl way to go!!! That is impressive I must say.

More questions:

Under the FBS Memory clock mode if I choose linked:
FSB Memory Ratio is enabled and can choose between:
1:1
5:4
3:2
sync mode

Also, FSB (QDR) MHZ: currently at 1066 and can be increased up to 3000.

if Unliked:

FSB Memory RAtio is disabled
MEM (DDR) mhz is enabled and at 800mhz. The max it can go is 2600.

I viewed the multiplier and it is currently set to 7. So that along with the fbs is the Divider I think. Do I tweak the multiplier or the FBS? And what is the main difference between linked or unlinked?

well just messing with the ratio....it doesn't seem to do so well when set to 5:3. I will try 1:1. Should i be messing with the multiplier while doing this?

should really read up on overclocking and learn the terms and what they do. You gotta teach yourself a lot of the stuff. You can't just get numbers from someone and expect them to work.

1st, find where your cmos battery is. You will need to remove it if you're overclock is unstable
2nd, for the most part don't mess around with the voltages. But you still can, just don't go overboard
3rd might be wrong, but a overclocking a cpu is kinda limited to what you're ram can do.
4th, keep upping the fsb.

But definately find some guides to teach you everything. It will make it a lot easier
