Can I read off someone else's harddrive?

A coworker is having problems with his PC and asked me to take a look at it. I asked him to bring it in, but instead he told me today that his daughter already took out the HDD and he wants me to look at that. I told him if I can boot off of it I will, but I was unsure if that was possible.
It seems all I would have to do is unplug mine and attach his. Is it that simple or am I going to screw something up? I was assuming there would be issues since none of the drivers I would need would be installed on his disk. Should I connect his, but boot off of mine and try to read his after my PC boots? Any advice would be appreciated.

I told the guy to bring the whole damn PC in to make it easier, but his family is nuts and wanted to do things the hard way.

depends on the problem...

if it wont work at all.. then ya it should tell u if the drive is dead..

but if its just a booting problem.. then likely it wont tell u anything

Most likely you won't be able to boot to his HDD, because the operating system has different drivers than the actual components that you have in your computer.. If that makes sense.

You're probly going to want to just throw it in as a slave and see if you can read the stuff off it like that.

You'll have different Hardware profiles. It's not going to work. It might boot, but you'll experience a whole slew of problems not related to any he may have been having with it in his computer.

Windows will definitely complain about all the hardware changes, but most likely it will just say that you have to activate within 3 days or something like that, and of course the res would be awful because you sont have a video card driver on it, but all in all, as long as your not doing anything too intense, you should be able to boot off it for you purposes no problem...assuming it CAN boot. Good luck!

thats what I was going to say!

I don't know if Windows will load drivers from a slave drive, but I seriously doubt it. This is probably the easiest option to do.

Yeah I was figuring this would be the answer. I also didnt mention that I have a SATA drive and who knows what his will be.

I am just going to tell him to bring me the whole computer or nothing. Thanks for the quick answers.
