seeing that the 8600gts's are dropping in price.. would i see any gain in performance vs my oc'd 7800GT?

No, you'd likely loose performance. What you'd gain is the ability to set "Ultra High" in Crysis, but then again, you won't be able to play at those settings. This goes from a guy that had that card and even OCed it to a very respectable 800GPU/1840Shaders.
The performance gain from changing to the HD3850 was huge and the prices are roughly equal for 256MB cards.
