High-End Gaming Rig: Need Help

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm new to building computers, but i'll have help on the physical part of building the computer, so all i need to do now is decide which components to use.

I want it to be a high-end gaming rig, with a budget around $3000 for the case and everything that goes inside it. I haven't decided whether or not i want to do water cooling, but i'd rather avoid it if i can. Definitely want SLI. And I will probably end up overclocking. So basically I'm looking for suggestions on parts, and i'll list what i decide on or thinking about below.

I currently have a G15 keyboard, a Microsoft Trackball Optical mouse, a 24" widescreen monitor, and z-5500 5.1 speakers. The $3000 is just for the tower.

I will be looking for a decent wrap-around desk in the near future. And I'm probably going to get an external HDD to store all the shows i watch (anime, lost, etc.) If anyone knows of a good one.

Parts I've Already Decided On:

Athena Power Back Plane - 3 x 5.25"Bays to 4 x 3.5"HD (SATA) $99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817119404

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 $254.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017

Artic Silver 5 $6.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835100007

COOLER MASTER RR-CCH-L9U1-GP 92mm Hyper TX2 CPU Cooler - Retail $21.99
I think I might go with something like this, basic...because I am not going to be doing crazy OCing, maybe later if i need to to be able to keep up with games.

2x EVGA 768-P2-N835-AR GeForce 8800GTX Superclocked 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail 499.99 x2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130079

2x Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM 149.99 x2

OR (I don't know why the price difference is minimal...but it bothers me)

Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $169.99

do you already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse? If so we could spec you out a n SLI rig for much less than $3K that would perform very well and be air cooled.

Also, do you want vista or xp?

Tri Sli would be kind of a waste, i'd prefer going for the 2x 3870x2s myself , also you could go for an already watercooled case like the Kandalf, the watercooling in it is way adequate for running the Quad at 3.6+ easily, and it has adequate room for all the hardware you can put in it.
The X2s would serve you well as they work best at high resolutions seeing you run a 24 incher.
Id also recommend at least 4 gigs of ram and vista 64bit to get the most out of your system, you'll have a lot more power than vista needs so why not?
If you have the money to spend, use them!
