Ultra 1600w X3 ULT40070

Hey guys I have the oppertunity to get one these for 290 shipped. Is this a good psu? I'm mostly looking for quiet and the fully modular design. Anyone with some good experience with these know? I'm on a 1kw now so any insight on the two as a comparison would really be beneficial!

sorry this doesn't answer the question at all but I have to ask why you want to get a 1.6kw PSU?

Not worth the upgrade. The PSU is good but you have no use for it.

Yes. A 500W PSU is likely overkill with the system you're running. 1600W would be ridiculous.

Ultra X3 PSUs are quite good. I have been using my 1kW one since I sold you the PSU that you are using. They are quieter than the Turbo-cool, though the Turbo-cools still have miniscule ripple compared to any other PSU available.

For the record, I also agree that you do not need the 1.6kW PSU. If anything, I would go with the Ultra X3 1000W PSU just for the silence, but again, you sacrifice the ripple stability that PC P&C PSUs offer (which should help the longevity of your components). However, if you have the 1.6kW PSU available for nearly the same price as the 1kW PSU from Ultra it may not be a bad deal. Bear in mind that the efficiency of the PSU may be adversely affected as well if you operate it so far below its rated capacity.

You need a 1KW for your setup already? Dude the 1.6KW isn't worth it unless you're gonna resell it

I was hoping you would see this. I'm willing to give up some ripple to lose some noise. I just figured the price was too good to pass up on the 1600w unit

*edit* There's not much of a price break on the 1kw ultra unit. it's only gong to cost me another 50-75 bucks to get the 1600w variety.

Also stargate - how much quieter is it than the PCP&C 1kw?

If the risks are alright with you, then go for it. Just make sure you register your PSU to get the lifetime warranty!

In terms of noise, the Ultra is down to the level of noise my case fans produce on low. (I am using the XtremeTurbine fans listed in my signature.) When using the 90+cfm-rated Silenx fans, the Ultra PSU was a tad bit louder than those fans on low. I only ever used the Turbo-cool with the default Thermaltake iCage fans, and the Thermaltake 120mm and 92mm SmartFans (which are loudest of all the fans I've mentioned so far). I would have to turn up the SmartFans to drown out the noise of the Turbo-cool.

As another comparison, I seem to recall that you used the Silverstone FM121 fans a lot. With that fan set on low in my Tuniq Tower 120, I can't hear it over any of the fans I am currently using, or the PSU. However, it doesn't take much increase in speed for the FM121 to out-scream the rest of my fans when on low, including the PSU. I also have a feeling that the FM121 would give the X3 a run for its money on low if I were using it as a case fan and not in my CPU cooler.

In other words, if you have your case fans on low (assuming they are any of the ones I've mentioned), you well definitely be able to tell the difference between the Turbo-cool and the Ultra X3, and it won't take much to drown out the X3's noise production in my experience, either.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that the X3 has the fan on the bottom side as opposed to the end, so make sure the PSU has good airflow from your case to keep the PSU cool.
