TBH SLI is generally a bad idea unless you're getting an absolutely top of the line card, and (obviously) more than one. SLI 8600's will not impress a single 8800gt at all... If you're going to multicard, Ati might actually be worth looking into. They have decent cards now in the 3850 and 3870 (if somewhat inferior to equivalent cost NVIDIA's), but they scale slightly better than NVIDIA cards (other than the 9600gt).

You can swap out heat sinks and the like as long as you take a bit of care with it.

you can get the 8800gs for $130 after rebate here...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150275

which is a huge leap from the 8600gt for only like $10-30 more.

so if i wanted a more budget performer is what your saying is i should skip the build up and just get the money card off the get-go, and stay with a single card set up? ill definitly hash that out. the gigabyte that you suggested earlier, am i going to be limited with it? ie. am i going to be limiting myself as future proofing is concerned. this idea actually i like. its going to lower my overall cost, which should offset the cost of buying a reputable power supply.

If you are going to game, I would sacrifice the E4XXX series and get an E2180 which will allow you to upgrade the GPU. As for Mobo, the Gigabyte P35-DS3L is one of the cheapest P35's out. The only drawback is no RAID.

You will not notice much of a performance leap between the E4XXX and E2XXX at the same clock speed.

If you can get money within 90 days of your purchase, you can get an eVGA 8600GT and step up later to a better card.

Remember, the performance jump from a 8600GT to 8800GS [or a 9600GT] is huge

so im kinda unclear about the evga step up program and am wondering. say i start with an 85XX then step to a 9XXX can i still utilize the program and then step up again to the 8800gs and then again up to the gtx? i mean that would be amazing for me because spending 400+ dollars for a card atm is completely unreasonable as thats basically my budget for the entire computer. but hat would be awesome if i could upgrade in bits and pieces

The last time I checked it didn't work that way. Basically once you've stepped-up to a different card then the program is no longer available.

Quote:
Q: Can I Step-Up more than once?
A: No.
Only new purchases can be entered for sumbission for the Step-Up™ Program. Cards received through the Step-Up™ Program cannot be upgraded.

ok so i visited the local fry's electronics today... and while browsing thru the cpu's i noticed a core 2 duo chip for 45 dollars... so i made a mental note to check when i got home on the E6420 2.13mhz chip core 2 duo. it seems to be a very good deal. im gonna post a review request in the intel chip section, but my question to you guys is, would this be a viable option for my set up or should i stay with the more expensive e4500?
