HP Laptop S/PDIF help

Thread Starter
I have a DV6000SE (Special Edition) Laptop. On this laptop it has a spdif output next to my headphones output.
I am trying to connect that output to my Yamaha amp so i can have better sound quality. I have a single 1/4 inch plug *headphone plug* that goes into RCA. When i plug it into my amp, it will only play my headphone selection through the amp. (When you go to sound properties and can switch between spdif and headphones, it only lets me use headphones.)
How do i activate the SPDIF controller so i have better sound quality?
I have updated the drivers for the hd sound controller.
