question on what video card to get

Thread Starter
I'm building a new computer, vista 64 bit

XFX MB-N780-ISH9 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI Intel Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6700

I was thinking of this card.

BFG Tech BFGR88768GTXOCE GeForce 8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

It is a good card but will it give me the best graphics?

What is up with the new XFX PVT88PYHD4 GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

It is almost as fast as the 8800gtx but the mb is the most difference between the two and the price.

I can get one 8800gtx or two 8800gt. What would work and be the best or is there another card out there?

Why not just get one 8800GT? Are you gaming on a 24" screen or bigger?

If you really wanted to save money get the Q6600 and overclock it to 2.66Ghz. The Q6700 is like $200 more for nothing.

I'm getting a 24" lcd to run with my computer. I'm still looking witch one to get.

It's not really about saving money. I thought the q6700 was a lot faster. Then the Q6600?

I guess what I want to know is why is the 8800gtx a lot more money then the 8800gt if there almost the same. If I would run the same computer side by side but one with the 8800gtx and other with 8800gt what will the difference be? And I'm taking about playing a high end game.

GTX is better than GT but not that much than G92 8800GTS. I would go for a G92 8800GTS or 8800GT but GXT is very cheap now, get one if you have budget for it.

My recommendation is like the OP above. Go the 8800GTS 512mb or buy a pair of 9600GT's and SLi them (since your board is plenty capable). a 9600gt cost b/w $170-190. Performance will be MUCH better than the GTX and you save a little bit also.

If money is not a problem I would definitely recommend the Ati 3870X2 over the 8800GTX.Since they cost similar but the X2 will eat the GTX in benchmarks.

I'm all why is the 8800gtx coast $450 and have 768mb and at 8800gts coast $340 with only 512mb and they perform the same?

How is the new 9600gt only $200 I know if you run 2 of these there a little faster then the 8800gtx or 8800gts. But what happens when you run 2 8800gts card?

thanks

Guys there coming out with a 9800gtx card in April? I see in the post above.

Should I just buy 1 9600gt for $200 to get my computer up so I can play the new games I got. And get the new 9600gtx when it comes out?

One a side note the Q6600 and q6700 are almost the same but you have to oc the q6600 like mrtn400 said. I thought oc was bad if you want you're system to last and not have any problems?

If you want bleeding edge in a few months, there should be GX2's soon (no idea when), which should be SLi able. I think that would be the fastest setup.

However, if indeed the 3870 x2 is similar in price, that would give you very high (highest single card) performance now and if you used a different motherboard you could crossfire later, or indeed now.

For most power go for a cheap(ish) single card to run your stuff, and get a GX2 or 2 further down the line.
