I Need A Lean and Mean Setup Suggestion - Page 2

I agree with the quad core. Its fast and its future proof. Microcenter has it for 200 now and newegg has it for 254.99. Pretty cheap i must say.

Quite old but interesting article on why Photoshop doesn't scale that well with multiple cores:

Dual Core would be fine... Quad 'could' be more future proof. Personally i would go for Core 2 Duo E6750/6850 or boosting up to the newer Core 2 E8400 (E8500 is a bit more expensive but a bit more powerful), and if you were to go Quad, the Q6600 would be ideal. If the new system is vista 32bit, 2GB for editing may be a bit iffy, 3GB would be ideal. If it was vista 64bit, a good set of 4GB DDR2 800Mhz (bout the same price as the fast 2GB ram) should be fine. Graphics up to you, but i would say ATI on this one as they offer more (and better) cards in this range for the price.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 £150
MSI P35 Neo2-FR Intel P35 £65
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX £65
HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro (v.gd in general for price) £95
CZ StealthXStream 500w Silent ATX2 Power Supply £36

Total ----- ~£415 and inc VAT ~£480.....so less that 500 for the basics.
(btw this is just an example of what could easily do CS3 photo editing, don't take it litterally!).

Dont buy 4GB of RAM with Vista 32-bit... it is a waste of money, because the 32-bit Vista only reads 3.2-3.5GB. I would suggest 64-bit Vista if using 4GB of RAM.

Also, you can get a cheaper motherboard than the IP35-Pro. I would suggest this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136043

It is cheaper, and better.

So if 4B is sitting there will it hurt anything other than a wallet.

I like the current MB because of the dual port WAN.

Thanks

Well, you can have 4GB there and have nothing wrong, but your computer cant use it all. It can only use 3.2-3.5GB. I would just go Vista 64-bit if you want 4GB of RAM, that is pretty much the only way around it.

I may just bump up to Vista-64 bit. I want the dual WAN so to have a PC to Notebook cable ready without disturbing my Cable modem to router setup.
Still mulling it though. Is New egg the best place to get Vista 64?
