I am all about moving forward and advancing technology but DD is the way of the future, not disks. Blu Ray will have a shorter life span that DVD when people realize that movies dont look that good that it warrants re-buying all the movies in your collection so you can have a couple extra features. I for one just bought an upscaling DVD player and it works just fine.

I have also played over 300 hours of Oblivion off of ONE DVD so whats the point???

Until BR saves a little girl from drowning or rescues a old lady from a rapist count me out. I would rather just point and click in Steam or some other service. I dont have a disk to worry about and I can re-download them at any time.

Blu Ray disk'd games dont look any better nor are they any longer. This is a fad that will pass quickly.
I disagree.

With the increase of Hard drive capacities in excess of 1024GB currently on the market these IS a need for larger non volitile storage and backup options. You have obviously never had to backup over a TB of storage using single layer DVD discs.

The upscaling of DVD (480 or 576) to 720p and 1080p is not true HD. It is the poor mans version. The quality of a film is dictated by the original source. True HD captured disks (coded at 720p or higher) will produce a far more noticable quality difference than any upscaled image.

Yes you point about a whole game fitting on one DVD is valid. However cast you mind back to when games switched from multiple CDs to one DVD. I can tell you I was glad!
With software development always improving so does the physical space required to store this code.

You mention Direct Download such as steam. Not everyone has high bandwidth connections which mean that this is a feasable option. Personally downloading over a GB worth of stuff from Steam is a pain in the ass.

Anyway thats enough from me lol

Yea but there is a MASSIVE difference between upscaled video to 1080i and true 1080P on an HDTV, but you don't see me with an HD player. I just have a DVR with HD channels, and 'other' HD files.............

No, not really. I tried that with the PS2. I only ended up buying 2 games for it (one of those was a PS1 game) because I didn't see much that interested me. That means I basically ignored the fact I could play games on it. Then there's the fact that I had to pay an extra $50 to get a remote control for it so I could use it as a DVD player. Yes, you could use the controller but it was awkward and the cords are short. Add to that the fact that the lens burned up after a couple of months. At the time, Sony wasn't admitting the lenses were crap, so I took it upon myself to use the gear adjusting trick, which I later found out voided my warranty. No, I don't think I will be buying a PS3 to use as a BR player. I don't think I will be buying a PS3 for any reason. I'll just wait till the prices come down and buy a Phillips BR player as I've had great luck with Phillips products.

The PS3 can decode any audio/video (Including TrueHD and Uncompressed PCM) that the blu-rays have and also supports HDMI 1.3a.

There is absolutely no reason to buy a standalone blu-ray player that I can see.

Interesting as you don't quite understand the whole HD video and uncompressed surround sound audio concepts yet....

EDIT:
As for the games subject.... lets take a look at Devil May Cry 4. If it werent for it being on the Xbox 360 (no - do NOT turn this into a PS3vs360 thread. Im just bringing up something that should be noted) it would've been longer and had more areas then what it had. The game is beautiful, dont get me wrong. But once you get to Dante's play through - sadly enough you have to go through every area you ALREADY been through along with bosses. Thats because they couldn't fit it on a DVD, and Im willing to put money on that. Overall, still a great game.

And congrats on the 300+ hours on Oblivion on a DVD, like that really makes any sense in your post. Nor did it contribute the whole conversation at all.

R4ven, quit it, this isn't even about gaming and you're talking about how games don't need large amounts of storage. Just to humor you though...why don't you still play games on CD? Trust me, games will need more than 9GB of data in the future. The reason why Blu-Ray is good for the PS3 is the same reason why Crysis won't run very well on the fastest computers and the same reason why you still play Oblivion (a game from 2006): those things are all FUTURE PROOF.

The timeline of hardware right now is pretty similar to what DVD was like a while back. Calm down and be patient. You can get an internal BD-ROM player for under $200, which I think is pretty good. It can only get better; the BDA wants Blu-Ray to become a home standard. Duh?
