Exposed Heat Pipes: Which direction?

The cores are side my side, with the hot stuff in the middle. Even with the diffusion in the cap, the heat is still concentrated. And with the exposed heat pipes, that must mean one is doing most of the work, at least on a Xigmatek 1283 which has three.

I was wondering if pointing it so it flowed top to bottom, pushed by the top case fans, would work better.. The three pipes would straddle the two chips, probably overlapping their sides.

Maybe it is worth trying. What do you think?

Based on your thinking of air flow (if I understand you correctly) I'd mount the heatsink so the heatpipes are stacked top to bottom...

In theory if you have a good push/pull setup the air should travel through your case, hit all three pipes if they are stacked top to bottom. If they set up left to right it only stands to reason that the pipe furthest to the right would get pretty much all of the cool air.

it would be like a car. Air hit the outside, leading edge and then travels along the contours of the body panels.

That's my take on it anyway.

Now do you mean that you will have your top case fan blowing air in because I generally though it was supposed to pull air out of the case since warm air rises?

With the exception of your top case fan blowing air in the wrong direction you'd most likely only be looking at a difference of 1 or 2 degrees.

logically, if we take perry's example and have the heatpipes like this : |||

If the heatpipe is set like the above small simple ASCII drawing, then it would enable the heatpipes to work optimally. The fluid resides in the bottom half, while the gas condenses in the upper half.

Heatpipes are, however, most efficient when they get to stand up ie. in a desktop case, as the fluid resides in the bottom part of the heatpipe, and gets to float upward to the fins.
