4GB CAS 4 vs 8GB CAS 5 ??? ((800Mhz))

Thread Starter
I know... another "help me buy thread" sorry...

Anyway here's my system:
Asus P5N32-E SLI (680i SLI)
E8400
Vista Ultimate 64bit
2x EVGA 512MB 7950GT (in SLI of course)

My current RAM:
4GB (4x1GB) Corsair 4-4-4-12 @ 800Mhz
TWIN2X2048-6400C4
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034

The problem.... should I keep my current RAM... or "upgrade" to...?
8GB (4x2GB) Corsair 5-5-5-18 @800Mhz
TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145176

The reason... can get the 8GB of RAM for $90 after rebates (not from newegg).

So I guess would the boost I get from 8GB vs 4GB be enough to ignore the slower timings?.... or if I get the CAS 5 stuff... what's the chance I'll get the 8GB to the 4-4-4-12 timings?

Or should I wait until I can find 8GB of 4-4-4-12 @ 800Mhz or faster for this price?.... also... if I do that, what's the chance my system would be stable at the CAS 4 and not need me to put the 8GB at CAS 5 anyway.

Once again... sorry about the thread, lol... have a drink on me and then please give some advice.

I can promise you that you will never need 8 gigs of ram (yet), so just go with 4 gigs. You can manually adjust the timings to get to CAS4.

wow.. that was a fast reply... thanks!

I know I could set the timings to CAS 4... but how stable my system would be is another matter as I know some boards seem to have issues with more RAM and low timings. I this was at a local store I'd buy the RAM and and bench it to see... but I'll be unable to do that.

So you figure by the time I'll be needing or using 8GB of RAM... it'll be time to upgrade to DDR3 or DDR4 anyway?

4GB should be plenty for the rest of this year

8GB later It will be cheaper, or DDR3 will be out

thanks for the advice guys... but 8GB of RAM for only $90 after rebates is sooooo tempting.... OK... taking a breath and holding on to my pennies. lol.

Yea, I have 4 gigs of ram and I never see it go above 40% usage.
Well, actually Vista will benefit from more ram even if it is slower, but those 6400C4 are really nice and OC good (at least mine, guess i have microns) so there's really no reason in my estimation for u to change it, just keep 4 sticks of 6400C4 and be happy

EDIT: better save some cash for 9 series geforce, just a hint

Do you do any video or massive photo editing? If no, go with 4GB of faster.
Once again...

Upgrade to vista if you haven't done so to take advantage of 4gb of RAM. 8GB is a bit excessive and you probably don't need all of it for normal-gaming use. If you do need it, then obviously get it, if not, you should wait.
