Would Phenom's yield similar results?
Phenom is a waste of money, you can get alot faster and cheaper from intel. (I am not a fanboy.. but it is the truth, AMD is behind)

If you are gaming at 1680x1050 the difference between your current processor and a conroe or better would probably be minimal in most games.

Is my rez too high or too low?

So how would YOU go about trying to break 10K on this rig?

Not through a new CPU?

Massive Overclock on the CPU and a good Clock on the GPU. Then you might break 10K.

Sorry for double posting. I've been told in the past it is alright i you allow some time in between the posts.

I have a question, I see that an Athlon 6400+ is well within my budget. (someone proposed an intel build, and assuming i buy the cheapest mobo on newegg, that would still be well over $250 to accomplish assuming i wanted a decent CPU) I am seeing from bench tests that it is roughly the same as an intel E6750 or even an E6850. The E6750, is indeed a conroe. Would this 6400+ yield enough power to my system to stop bottlenecking my GPU... You guys DO think my CPU is causing a bottleneck right?

OR, was the intel switchover suggested in this sense. Buy a cheapo Conroe and OC to to 3 Ghz. My current mobo won't allow me to OC anything. It's an HP, but the price was phenomenal.

Will the suggested E2180 Overclock well? I see that it is NOT a conroe, and it is an Allendale. What kind of power will an Allendale yield at the implied 3 Ghz compared to the 6400+ Windsor at 3.2 Ghz. I know I know, clockspeed doesn't mean anything now-a-days.

EDIT: Wait a minute!
the E2180 is a Pentium D! I thought netburst was FAR slower than Athlon. Is this not the case?

Don't get the Allendale if you plan on overclocking. Getting the 6400 Black Edition and overclocking it would give you a fairly big increase in CPU power, but you said you cannopt overclock with your board. You would possibly score 10,000 3DMarks if you went this way, and it would cost you far less than getting a comparable Conroe with a good overclocking motherboard.

I say if you want best bang for the buck, get the 6400+. If you want something a little more future-proof and performs better, save your money until you can get the Conroe and a decent motherboard.

EDIT: Don't dare buy a Pentium D! They are garbage.

im just in rampant disbelief that someone with a 3850 gfets higher 3d marks than I do. I think im going to wait for a price drop on the 6400+ (not the black one) and buy that. from 8000 to 10,000 is a 20% gain.

The proposed intel build is rather underpowered. Its a Pentium D for crying out loud.

EDIT:
Big Question here:
Will my stock cooler for my 4800+ cool a 6400+ black edition the nanometers are different). I am NOT going to overclock. I found a black editon for less $ than a normal one with cooler.

An intel build would cost SOOO much more, and in gaming terms not offer much benefit to my sig PC!
