Few points i would like to make :
1 : AMD's memory controller is far superior to Intel's, if Intel can do it AMD can. Like i said earlier AMD's memory woes stem from the chipset not the CPU.
2 : My 4x1Gb setup should do more strain because the controller is handing 4 separate dimms which means more bandwidth but also more bandwidth management.
3 : As long as your motherboard supports that much memory you are good to go.
4 : I'm not sure how much better Vista will do in 4gb of 8gb but 4gb is plenty for me however i don't know exactly what your planning on doing so i won't try to stop you.
