I didn't see dralb's reply, so forgive me if he had this idea.

But are there any settings in her BIOS where it's possible to boot from the USB port, or rather, something possibly to the effect of "boot from flash drive", much like "boot from floppy"?

When I said "boot from floppy", then it hit me: is it possible to make a bootable floppy on your pc so you can use it to boot her laptop up so you can get to the prompt and then access the jump drive from there?

If worst comes to worst, the only option would be to get the cheapest cd-rom drive you can find as a temporary replacement until a better one can be purchased.

My reply is also serving as a bump to keep it in the Live posts.

Bump!

Oh. My mom's laptop came with a floppy. It's a Pentium 4 2.8GHz and has a dvd writer.

Anyway, the only option I can personally come up with is to buy a cheap cd-rom drive as a temporary replacement. Other than that, I'm stumped.

But I have this feeling that somebody will come along and say "oh yeah, all you have to do is..." I'm looking forward to it just in case I ever need to know!

oh wow, ok sorries bout that.

but i believe i found the solution.

http://www.modaco.com/content/Asus-E...-a-USB-stick-/

I am using the software now its copying stuff over to my 1 gig usb stick and i will test it and reply with results and if it works and installs faster than a cd maybe this can be a sticky to installing xp with a USB stick.

It will be an hour or so, the software is copying over files and its slow, because it can read so fast from the cd.

hope it works .

Aw yeah I hope that works too. This could make for a good thread title: "Install WinXP with a stick!"

I'm looking forward to seeing if this works!

Absolutley does not work, I've tried original XP disc that is just SP1, I've tried my slipped streamed SP2 XP disc and same thing, the laptop juust says remove media device and restart, my pc "p5n32-e" gets an error called error: 18 blah blah blah.

saddens me.

Would have been nice to see xp install really quickly.

well sorry for clogging up the forum.

You can install it if your bios will allow you to boot of a Flash drive,
If not you cant,
U just copy all the ISO Files onto it
