rate Gentoo - Page 2

I've had the easiest time getting games setup in Mint and Suse. In Sabyon and Fedora, games (Doom 3, namely) just wouldn't work for some odd reason.

Sabayon is extremely easy to set up and use as long as you don't plan on updating your software too much; the world update is a VERY lengthy process (lengthy as in days) that takes a lot of knowledge of Portage and of your Linux system.
By default, Sabayon comes with pretty old versions of all its software; WINE is still 0.9.45 and the nVidia drivers are as old as 100.14.19.
If you are willing to learn though, I'd recommend Sabayon.

Anyway, to the OP, Gentoo is one of the harder distros to learn; of all the ones I've tried, it's definitely the hardest.
Some people tell me Slackware is harder than Gentoo, but I haven't tried it yet.

well ive used slackware a couple of times, im actually triple booting with it as we speak. the only problem ive had with it has been my wireless. i could get it to connect and say it was connected and show a 54mbps connection and everything, but i still couldnt browse the web or login to pidgin. i did get steam installed and logged in on it though...which is odd.

ive used linuxmint and it worked fine for getting steam games to work, but steam games are like 5% of my gaming. im hoping for different games, ones that use a disc to install, which is where i seem to be having the most trouble.

What games specifically are you talking about? To me, it sounds like your issues are mostly application related rather than kernel/distro related.

If you want to learn Gentoo, use Gentoo. If you want to learn linux use Arch or Slackware (or Debain - basically any of the "base" distrobutions that others are built upon. They aren't going to baby you or provide you with a GUI for everything).

well ive never had trouble with steam games, so i guess im more aimed towards newer games. mainly cod4, i know its known for trouble, but its also known to work on certain distros with certain settings/tweaks.
