I need your opinion on E8400

1.31 vcore, not Orthos stable at 4100*9. Core Senosrs read 69C Load in Coretemp.

At stock vcore and settings, my Cores read no lower than 57C idle, CPU Temp Idle's around 13C (In my basement, not in case)

At 1.28 volts My "CPU temp" never goes above 48C . Coretemps look pretty bad reaching 66C at 1.28 BIOS vcore (1.26 vdroop), it's 100% stable!

I've reseated my Zerotherm BT90 twice, and now have my good old trusty Big Typhoon lapped on it, which got my Opty 165 to 3.0 GHz hardly breaking a sweat. Temps haven't changed much between these 2 coolers or my stock cooler for that matter. I don't consider myself an expert, but I think I know how to put on HSF's. I've probably done it 50 times. I built my friends PC, and his E8400 read around 56C Load core temps with my Zerotherm in the same exact room, same exact ambient temp and same exact setup. Could it be crappy Intel craftsmanship? Them not getting enough thermal compound between the lid and the core?

And I when I check CPU usage in MBM, core 1 usually gets most of the work. So my thoughts are that core 1 should be the hotter one. Both my cores always read the exact same. It has been like this since day 1 with all 3 coolers.

Not a notch above 445 is stable so far up to 1.31 vcore. But it boots up fine up to 500x9, 1.28 vcore.

I think 4.5 GHZ is achievable, but my "Core sensors" will definitely read me above 70C. Pretty hot!!

I just don't know what to do here burn it up or stay where I'm at.....not that 4.0 GHz isn't fast enough or anything

If this was your CPU, what would you do?

Maybe get an I.R. thermometer. You can point at something and get the temps of it. You'll know right away what the temps really are (assuming the IR thermometer is working properly). You won't get core temps from it, but you can get heatspreader temps if you can get a good angle.

I dunno, just a thought, I've been considering getting one. I think it'd be useful for other temps, like mosfets, nb and sb temps, or even just case temps.

Aside from the thermometer, have you simply touched your CPU heatsink to see if it was pretty hot? If you're confident your HS is properly seated, and your heatsink isn't hot, I'd say that is a good sign.

I'm in the same boat as you, not really sure what my temps are on my 8400, or I might go higher FSB. I'll be getting a new case and HS soon, but it is hard to wait.

I'd suicide it a couple of times. I mean you gotta know how far you can push it right? But I wouldn't try finding a 24/7 speed above 4GHz, as it would put too much voltage into the chip for an extended period of time.

Thanks guys, +reps for your opinion.

I may just try a suicide run at 1.36 vcore, think it would be OK for at least an 8 hour Orthos test?? Temps will "show" very high (read post 1)

Edit: Heatsink wasn't very hot at the base when I had it out of the case in the basement, but that was at 1.28 vcore. It was warm, but definitely not hot.

I was going to tell you that maybe the surface is not completely flat and maybe you need to lap it, but then you said that both of your cores read the exact same. My cores read 42/25 idle and never go below it. There was another member here who had the same symptoms as with his e8400 and after a lapping job, his temperatures were more accurate. I know that my temperatures are actually lower in reality because when I was Orthos testing at 42F outside temperature, Coretemp stayed at 42/45. There's no way your temperature idle's that high, I would say it's a misread, just like mine

Whatever you do just don't go above 1.3625 for 24/7 use.

Hey, thanks guys. I'm just now geting back to this.

Well, I ran 1.36 vcore through it the other night. 1.34 vdroop. I got to 4.15 GHZ Stable in .05 GHZ Increments. I think it'll get higher, but the Cores were reaching 70C so I shut it back down after about a 2 hour Orthos test. I redid my PC wiring, reseated my HSF 1 more time, and am now getting worse temps (I wish the AS5 would settle a little quicker than 4 days). Gonna keep it here at 4.0 GHz, 1.28 volts until the AS5 cures and temps hopefully get back closer to the original middle 60s in Orthos Load.

While I had the BT off, I pulled the CPU and checked it with a straightedge. The CPU is ever so slightly bowed inwards to the center. I wish I could lap this thing, but I'm prolly gonna sell or trade it for a quad, which is why I won't do any higher than 1.36V.

I think I need a better fan for the BT. Anyone got any firsthand suggestions/input on a good Quiet 120mm replacement for the old beast? The Yate Loon (I think that is the original fan, by the way) just ain't cutting it.

What about THIS one??

Or would I just be better off with a better than stock Big Typhoon Cooler?? If so, what would you recommend for a good quiet 120 mm replacement fan? I have a fan controller, so RPM's are not an issue. But I would prefer quiet with high RPM's.

so far alot of people have been reporting higher temps than it should be

however, unless your just looking fo rnumber, than a good stable oc that performs up to you standards is all that matters.

i suggest finding a good stable spot that makes you happy in what ever it is you do with the computer and be happy with it.

personally, i prefer to overclock processors the highest they can go with testest stability with stock voltages, as i did with my current and last CPU listed in sig

never worth putting the processor in danger for a number (06 scores or ghz rating)

btw wher the f is 08 lol

whatever you do, just dont run it 24/7 with a voltage exceeding 1.4vcore...reports of screwed up chips have been flying. BTW my friends runs stable at 4.0Ghz and 1.36vcore, temps never exceed 50c on his nirvana if that helps at all.
