Onboard Realtek AC97 or Creative SB Live

Thread Starter
I have this older SB Live sound card and I wondered If I would see any benefits using this and disabling the onboard. I read that using a PCI sound card takes some stress off the CPU(compared to using onbaord), but how horribly will this card sound/perform?

Model: CT4830

Thanks.

The general rules is: Any external sound card is better than onboard, unless it's manufactured in 1995 or something. So yes, use the SB Live. They aren't that bad.

I would use the PCI soundcard if i were to use it for things like music softare audio playback and rendering.

Using PCI, as you stated, would also help with CPU load when you play games and if the card has any kind of Memory it could help with the buffering.
It really depends on what you are planning on doing soundwise.

What kind of SBLive soundcard do you have? specs?
Edit: oh, 98-99..Thats old.
Check if that soundcard has any onboard RAM, if it hasn't i dont think there would be a great deal of improvement for using the PCI. Try to get the latest drivers (if they still exist for dl)

Your PCI card has:

EMU10K1 audio processor with 1,000+MIPS and two million transistors
32-bit, 192 db, 48kHz using 8-point interpolation
256 voice capability
SoundFont technology to load samples from 2MB to 32MB into system RAM for music playback
