129*C on EVGA 8800GTS G92!?!

I just got done playing Project Reality and as always I had HWMonitor running in the background. After playing for about 2 hours straight I came out and it said my max GPU temp was 129C!!!!!!!!!!!! AAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Is this a misread or could it really have gone that high? I have Rivatuner setup with fan profiles, but I hear that it sometimes does not work properly. I have noticed this while idling. I have never seen a real reading above 56C, even when playing COD4 on high settings with my GPU overclocked. Playing PR just now I had no overclocks running and my case fans are all blasting.

I have also had some strange and outrageous temp readings on HWMonitor, but they are always completely obvious that they are wrong, like -12,938,293, or 121,231 quite literally. But 129C actually seems like it could be right.

Is there any way to get Riva to record my temps for longer than just a few minutes? It seems now when I save a "log" it is only as long as the window can show in the Hardware Monitoring window. I wouldn't mind having it use a lot of space to save my entire game.

Should I RMA the card just in case? I've been kind of weary about it lately. Something just doesn't feel right.

yea maybe you should RMA it, the temp sensor might be faulty but you should RMA for that too lol

is it hot to the touch when it gets that high? mine typically loads around 55*C with overclocks and stock fan at 65%

(now if u had a 7900, i wouldnt know what to tell you, mine used to get up to 100C under load, and i used it for a year till i replaced it with my g92 lol)

edit: nvm, i think ur software could also be the culprit, might be reading the sensors wrong, i just realized u said it dodnt go over 56C in COD4

That is scary,
Id try simulating what happened again, using a different temperature monitor (Ntune or ATITool)

Poor little guy. I've only had it for 2 weeks. I am sending my 680i in for step up. I will try and call EVGA next week and see if I can send the card in at the same time.

Does ATI-tool keep track of the max temp reached? That is why I love HW Monitor because it shows the max temps for everything.

I don't know what to think about this. I get different temp readings for almost every program I try to run. Usually Rivatuner and HW Monitor seem right, and they are almost always the same temp. GPU-Z is NEVER right!

Right now idling with fan at 60% according to Rivatuner:

Rivatuner - 41
HW Monitor - 41
ATI Tool - 41

GPUZ - 33 I don't think that is right.....

download and run RTHIBL in conjunction with the ntune monitoring software. RTHIBL will max out your card and give you a good idea of what the top temp is.

Touch the card and see if you get burned. If not...the sensor is definitely faulty.

Ntune should not be used. Everyone here will tell you that. It's screwed over both Windows installs AND BIOS.

Touching it though isn't really a good thing to do imo.. My Ultra gets very hot to the touch.. Not really enough to burn you, but very close. Are you sure the fan is spinning properly and not going on and off? I'd either RMA it, or try an aftermarket cooler.

ATI Tool artifact scan for 10 minutes... currently running I am getting

Riva - 53
ATI-Tool 53 (Updates a little slower than Riva though, it said 52 a second ago now it is 53)
HW Monitor - 53
GPUZ - 44.5

HW Monitor says my max was 54C. That is about normal and what it usually gets to. I'm going to touch it and see what happens. The back of the PC board is like warm water. I'd call it colder than bath water.

The air coming out of the exhaust is also just barely warm. The outside of the heatsink shroud is warm to the touch, but not extremely hot at all.

Ok, something is seriously wrong here. I was just watching GPU-Z and it jumped to 109.5C and then back down to 45.5. *sigh*
