buddy needs more help than I can give

Thread Starter
A friend of mine has purchased a 9600gt OC and whenever he installs it, his computer locks up before windows even boots sometimes, and sometimes it will let him run his games before it locks up. If he puts his 7950 back in, and tries to re-install the drivers for it, it tells him that he already has the drivers and would he like to overwrite. He claims that he uninstalled all the 7950 drivers in safe mode, then rebooted to install all the 9600 drivers. Everything runs fine with the 7950 but not with the 9600. n
Power supply is BFG 650watt, FoxConn C51MCP51 mobo, with an AMD 64x2 4200 2.2 gh cpu. n

Did he use driver cleaner pro (free DL) after un installing the 7 series drivers? Best to be used in safe mode after un installing the old drivers. Then shut down, swap cards then install the newest drivers from Nvidias site.

Well, you can always check in Device Manager to see what driver is actually installed.

As for the lock up, I'd get the driver issue sorted out first.

also, has he tried resetting cmos, or resetting the BIOS? this could help cos the PCI-E interface could be overclocked

Alright, sounds good. And just to clear things up, because being scattered in a thread is kind of confusing...

1: Put back the old card.
2: Delete the drivers, restart in safe mode.
3: Use driver sweeper on the Nvidia Display drivers, reboot into normal mode.
4: Repeat step 3. (Yes, double sweep. Sometimes it gets stuff the first one missed.)
5: Install the new graphics card, with no drivers in the computer.
6: Clear the CMOS by taking out the battery in the motherboard and letting it sit for 5 minutes. (Mark which way the battery goes in at this point.)
7: Re-insert the battery and start up the comp.
8: And...well, it should be good.

If that doesn't work, come right on back.
