That’s unfortunate…because parents don’t TEACH children to speak. Every one of us has the innate ability to ACQUIRE language. It does have something to do with the parent speaking in the vicinity of the child…but beyond that…you don’t teach a child to speak.

All children (except for those very sad cases) will learn the basic structure of a language 100% on their own. Look it up. I believe you could find it under the header of: ‘Language Acquisition.’

Sorry…haha…English major here so I just had to set that straight.

EDIT: BTW, I am going to have to assume they already know this...because if they don't...they are digging a hole. It's reported by the BBC...and they may not have realized this 'small' fact.

That is true, but without the parents, or someone speaking the language, the child will never learn.

I don't understand the thrill behind making robots able to talk and maybe one day even... love

Keep them dumb is what I say. Dumb robots don't tap into Skynet and fire our nukes at us. Smart robots might.

Yep...thats what I was saying...they need to hear the language being spoken...thats it. I can't remember the exact time-frame, but if you seclude a child for a decently short period of time, they will NEVER be able to acquire language...ever. (BTW, I think decently short is like the first six months of it's life...but...thats short compared to the average lifespan in todays society)

wow. that's just what we need, a reborn chuckie army to kill everyone. i mean i know that we're getting more advanced in technology, but seriously haven't they seen sci-fi movies where the robots take over in the future. gives me the creeps to think the the story from the terminator could possibly be true in the future.

I thought it was till they were about 5. After 3 without any language makes it very hard for them too.

Have you ever heard of the "wild children" in the late 1800's and early 1900's? Kids that got separated from their parents for some reason and had been raised by animals. They spent the first 6-12 years of their life in the wild being raised either by wolves or otherwise. When brought back into society, they were unable to learn human language, although they could still show a lot of emotion.

I saw a video on this in Psychology class a few years ago, and it's stuck with me, I find it interesting.

This one stuck with me. She actually learned a language after she was brought back in contact with humans. She never was really in a wild area though, she had contact with language.
