Trying to get 37" to look better.

Hey people!

A friend of mine just bought this. http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=16
We hooked it up to his ATI (I believe it is a x600 something) through the hdmi with an dvi to hdmi adapter and it looks terrible. I have tried every resolution that it will let me select from and I can't get it to really clear up. I pulled the card and hooked it up to the on board video at 1366x768 and it looks way better but the fonts still look pretty bad. I am thinking the video card is the problem. If he gets something newer shouldn't it have support for hi def resolutions? Will windows even support hi def res and still keep the fonts clear?

Thanks.

I have the same tv and ran my 8800gt on it and it was fine, so I am thinking yeah it's the card. Unfortunately I have to bring the tv back because it does't work with the remote(the remote works on other vizio tv's) the power light does not come on and no sound from my high def audio. It was Fail right out of the box.

What resolution did you have it at with your 8800gt?

So you have it hooked up with a VGA cable and not HDMI? Everything looks good on VGA at 1366x768 EXCEPT fonts. They look blocky. I have tried cleartype but it puts a shadow on the fonts and makes them hard to read.

The fonts just look blocky because the pixels are so large on a TV (even high def) compared to a monitor. I mean, you're taking your average 19" monitor resolution and stretching it to 37".

Text is just going to look blocky, no way around that except anti-aliasing. Is he running Vista or XP? I believe Vista anti-aliases out of the box (which I believe is the Cleartype you are talking about), and I don't think XP is even capable of anti-aliasing in the OS.

He is using XP. I was actually thinking that it might be as good as it gets but I was hoping that I could get it working through HDMI and get it a little better.
