Free Easy distro for PS3

All right. Me and my friends are total n00bs, and this is the first Linux thing we have ever done. We need a Free linux distro for PS3. Is it possible NOT to need a DVD to read from? As in, We don't have a DVD-Burner available. So, we need a free distro, that we can download on to the PS3... first.

I think there is a version of Ubuntu for PS3, but it's pretty half-assed... I believe you need a PS3-specific distro since, obviously, the architecture is different than that of a PC.

Well, yeah. That makes sense. But I was looking through Google, and it wasn't making a lot of sense. Basically, my friend just wants to play WoW for now... any help there?

Sony have locked access to the GPU so pretty sure you cannot play WoW or any games (that require a GPU) when running Linux on the PS3.

Fedora 8 PPC is nice, and Fedora is one of the original OS's to be PS3 enabled. As long as running Cedega or Wine in a PS3 environment, I'm not sure.

You can choose pretty much any linux distro, as long as it has been compiled for the Power PC architecture, on which the Cell processor runs.

http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora

Just click the "PPC" link.

Can this be confirmed by anyone running Linux on a PS3? I would like to know for sure before I try anything.

Confirmed, the GPU is definatly locked. I think it's because you could make a ps3 emulator then play pirated ps3 games in linux, as you wouldn't have to emulate the hardware.

I'm sure hackers will find a way though, with mod-chips or whatever they are called.
