okay on my E8400 im getting really screwy temps persistently

Coretemp and everest read a 60*C Load for a stock clocked E8400. Idle is around 50*C with a 5*C difference between cores!

Now with my cooling that I have I KNOW there is something wrong! I had this thing underclocked to 2.0ghz on 1.0 volts and my IDLE was still 45*C

Ive reseated 6 times now, using the optimal amount of Arcticcoolign MX2 as per MFG site.

Anyone have a solution other than re-flashing? Ive done so to the latest P03 BIOS 3 times now, Once via Windows!

off topic thing: I wiggled the heatsink trying to get the fans on - surely this does not affect my temps right?

Does it matter the batch number?

Some E8400's have been known to have mis-calibrated temp sensors from the factory.

I can't say with 100% certainty that is what's happening in your case but it is a known issue with some. I would try an RMA if possible and hope you have better luck with the next one.

Best bet is to send it back. If its a faulty temp probe or faulty cpu, either way it has a fault from factory so you can get a new one under warrenty.

Okay so an RMA is something to look into

How long would one take? few days? Week? Might wait till spring break to do this

I couldn't tell you as I've never had to RMA anything myself (knock on wood). Anyone care to shed some light on RMA times?
