It's a policy that makes quite a bit of sense actually.

When Dell gets a PC back to repair, they wouldn't leave the cables all over the case or any dust/marks/dents that they get on it during repair, they would clean it up to look nice for the customer, as any reputable company should.

I understand that in this case the "dirty" part was signatures, but if I owned a hardware company I would try to keep things looking new and in good condition, and would never send back dirty equipment.

People don't just hate them because they're Microsoft, you know; it's because of things they've done over the years.
And if they didn't clean them you'd be all like "OMG WTH they didn't freaking clean my XBOX *WHINE*"

Every company cleans refurbs at the beginning of the process. I thought that made sense.

Given that I'm such an ******* in person I would definitely be somebody that would do this just to make someone's life a little bit less of a happy place.

It wasn't "dirty" to him. And not only that, he actually sent them a letter saying that he wanted his Xbox back with the signatures and drawing on it, and they said it wouldn't be a problem; obviously it was. It's not that they washed it off, it's that they said it wouldn't be a problem, but they still washed it off. That just shows that Microsoft doesn't really care about their customers. Sure it could have been a screw up, but it's happened more than once on Microsoft's part.

When you have a (80?) billion dollar company, I'm sure a few mistakes handling individual situations will happen.

Or maybe since a few select things happen we should burn them at the stake

I have a quote for you:

If you paint it and it gets scraped, then what? If a sticker you got at Comic-Con 2005 gets peeled up on the corner, are they responsible for replacing it?

No. I mean, come on. They have to draw a line. They provide a console that consists of “X†and they are only responsible for returning to the customer a console that ALSO consists of “X.†IF you want your modified console returned intact, then don’t send it through the corporate process to be repaired. Take it to someone local, and pay for the repairs.

When submitting your unit for repair, you are not guaranteed your unit back, nor are you guaranteed a "Brand New" unit, you may receive a recently returned and Factory Refurbished -"Fully functional to original specifications"- Unit instead.
Now, say that unit had come from a questionable care environment, and the techs only repaired the electronics inside!

If you sent yours in to be repaired/refurbished and it came back with gum and lint and Crayola on it You would be a little bit miffed; wouldn't you?
So, they clean the units as SOP.
from the thread:
Quote:
Im one of the people that works at MS for console repair.
(im a lacky but I can shed some light on this)

Keep in mind that the console repair facility for north america is in mexcio, by a 3rd party company, under administration by microsoft. Very few people there speak english so the letter would have just been disregarded when the consoles are unboxed.
Standard procedure is for the consoles to udnergo a cleaning and removal of any stickers or anything on the console before and after the repair process (otherwise it might get back dirty and people would complain about that). Thats what happened here. It got scrubbed with rubbing alcohol twice before leaving.

Nobody took vengance against the console to purposley scrub it off, this incident inst the fault of MS. Its just std procedure to make sure the consoles are returned to the customer in like new condition.
and as many have pointed out, the onus lies solely on the tech support Phone operator for promising something that he could not guarantee would occur.

So it is still in Microsoft's court to attempt to rectify the matter, but, cries of underhandedness and malicious negligence are out of order.

In fact I think this could turn out great for M$;
If the word spreads and the upstanding & "we're just 'one of the lads"" folks at various Game devs. get together and come up with an uber autographed/stenciled/airbrushed/goldplated/"1ofakind" replacement for Nathaniel; they could gain loads of new xboxers who were previously ambivolent.
My
Cheers

If a representative tell you that your property will be intact when you RMA it due to a stupid manufacturing problem, then that should be the end of the story. For someone to go WIPE IT COMPLETELY DOWN is UBSURD. I dont care about any policy or ****. If Im told that it will stay intact, it should stay intact. I should be able to TRUST a company and their staff and not even think twice about it once Im assured that it will be ok.

It special request was sent out, it wasn't like he sent in his 360 and said they won't bother to clean it.

What they should've allowed him to do is remove the internal stuff and send it in. That would've been hell of alot assuring.

from the thread:
I'm guessing that at places like Microsoft's factories etc, there wouldn't be any gum, lint, Crayola, or anything of the sort. Just ask yourself, would it really be that hard for them to just take the cover off, place it on their desk, and fix whatever's wrong with it, place the cover back in, put it in a box, and ship it back out? I'm sure that he wouldn't mind if there was a simple scratch on it, but they washed it ALL off.
