overclocking an Intel Celeron

Thread Starter
I have a desktop pc with a PM800-M2 motherboard and an Intel Celeron 2.4GH. I would like to continue using this machine since I've never had issues with it. I wonder if overclocking the processor and graphics card would give me much of a speed increase. I've never done any overclocking before and would very much appreciate some help and advice.

also I'd like to add two hard drives to the existing one. the motherboard has 2 IDE ports and one is taken up with the CD & DVD drives. I'd like to know how I can safely connect three drives to the other IDE port. I know that I can make one Master and the other one Slave, but how can I add the third one?

you can view the motherboard stats here:

hey,
i have a board thats very similar to that, same sb slightly different nb, different brand...
first things first, i would recommend filling in your comp. specs in the profile, so the rest of us can help you better.

I'm also new to ocing, but i recently overclocked my old celeron a few mhz, got it from 2.2ghz to 2.4(well almost 2.6, but the memory kept making errors.)

what you'll need to oc, correct me if im wrong..., is a temperature monitor, (i use speedfan), and a memory tester like memtest86 to check for memory errors.
overclocking heavily depends on cooling as you've probably discovered by now. so if you could post your processor type, memory type and cpu temp. at idle and load i could help you a little more...(or just fill out your specs)

so to answer your question, if your cpu is nice and cool you will probably be able to oc a few mhz...
just a guess, but you will probably have more ocing success than me...(don't laugh at my asrock)
edit...eh..just saw your cpu type is posted...but is it pentium 4 or celeron?

thanx for the response. I seem to have mixed up my two machines. this one has a Celeron and it's rather reliable. I've added some of the specks I was able to locate, and made the question more precise. I don't want to start tinkering with things I barely understand, so I'd like to find out if it's even a good idea for this machine. also if you've got any suggestions on my second dilemma they would be greatly appreciated

I'd buy a P4 myself. They're only like $60 for a 3.0Ghz one at newegg. But if you must keep the Celeron, educate yerself before you touch it, you've gotta watch the temp of the Celeron, stress test it to see if it's stable, and stress test the memory to see if that's stable, and if that board doesn't have a lock for the PCI (And AGP) slot speeds, I wouldn't touch anything on it.

Ha, on my old p3 i messed around with the AGP speeds and PCI just for the heck of it lol.

A good temp/benchmark/stability program is pc wizard. For your HDD's though you should be able to change the settings from your bios. Just make sure the HDD that has XP on it is left as the master

here is how you add more ide drives to your system:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...%2f+RAID+Cards
post #10 of 10
You can only add up to 4 IDE devices to that motherboard. You have two IDE channels, each able to run 2 devices. On each channel, you should have one drive set to slave, and the other one set to master. Doesn't matter where the drives are, other than i would recommend having the boot drive be the master on the primary channel.

No such thing as 3 or more drives on one channel...

You can always get a reletivley cheap pci raid card for like 50-60 bucks and use sata drives if you want...

as for overclocking your computer, you want to find the 'fsb' setting, and the 'memory speed' settings... Not sure if your board has voltage settings, but ether way, it would be better to play around with just upping the fsb and making sure your ram speed can handle the overclock, before you start messing with voltages... It's a whole lot safer to not mess around with voltage settings until you know for sure your doing it the right way...
