Advice/critique on proposed gaming rig wanted

Thread Starter
The planned use is primarily for a gaming rig, a little photo editing and possibly wouldnt mind a gfx card that makes using a 2nd pc for video capture easy.

The only other thing that i can think that would need to be mentioned is im purchasing as a UK buyer. So for most items id like UK availability but if it doesnt create huge headaches regarding warranty and rma i dont mind considering EU purchase either.

Proposed build so far:

CPU: E8500

Mobo: Abit IP35 PRO (uGuru sounds good for me )

RAM: 2 x 2GB DDR2, either i) Corsair new (with free fan) 8500C5 or i) G. Skill 8500 C5

GPU: 8800 GT 512MB. Edging toward EVGA, BFG or XFX but cant seem to find which models are the V2 with better cooling.

CPU Cooling: Tuniq Tower 120 or TrUE, + AS5 or Shin Itsu.

HDs: Sys: Samsung F1 320 HD322HJ single plat. Progs: WD6400AAKS.

Case: Lian Li V2000 Plus II or Lian LI PC-A70 (Open to suggestions on alternatives . Looking for good build quality and understated looks)

Optical: LiteON LH-20A1L 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter + LightScribe

Sound: Creative X Fi XtremeMusic

Monitor: Choosing from 24" : i) Samsung 2493HM (TN, HDMI) , ii) Dell 2408WFP (SPVA, HDMI) or 22" if gpu maybe not enough for 1900*1200 i) Dell 2208 WFP, ii) Samsung SM-226CW

PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V 610W

General advice on compatibility and overall value that i would be getting from respective components appreciated.

Edit: Updated to reflect areas where I've settled on a choice.

I wouldn't get the Xtreme Audio, it is basically a rebranded Audigy.

The Silencer 610 should be plenty for your system. Unless you plan on dual GTXs or something.

The case is awesome... but do you really need something that big?

A Corsair PSU would be cheaper and provide the same performance.
Once again...

Thx for the feedback guys.

I will reconsider the soundcard and investigate the onboard abit more on the 2 boards ive rounded down to.

The case and psu were kinda of the 2 areas that i was thinking of buying semi future proof. I thought that getting a psu that could handle sli and more drives should i choose that route in a year or so (basically if i want killer performance on 1900*1050) would be a good investment. The case, i thought it looks great and is decent quality and has more space than i need, but I can see myself maybe heading towards experimenting with water in the future so why not make the investment now?

Im thinking perhaps some of that logic migth be flawed. For example how future proof would a decent PSU be? Thoughts on that appreciated as well as of course recommendations on other components (still unsure as to how to go about guaranteeing a V2 8800GT).

yea try and get an x-fi xtrememusic and i wouldn't chose any of those two motherboards although they are both superb overclockers they are just a bit overpriced for a decent P35. The GA-P35-DS3L and the P5K-E are both good alternatives. If you do not need the axtra features then even the ABIT IP35-E will serve you nicely. Out of those monitors i would probably chose the samsung one just because it's a samsung xD.

Thx kazakia, ill take your recommendation on the sound card and checkout the mobos you suggest a bit more.

I think on monitor side there isnt much in it since the dell's use samsung screens and seem to have overall good build quality, I think its gonna come down to if I think a single 8800GT 512 is fine to run a 24" @ native 1920*1200. After working that out I will probably let the best deal I manage to find out of the monitors ive narrowed down to decide it.

I've seen some e8500 overclocks that seem to imply they are higher binned. Obviously no guarantees.

Check out the Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4; not much more expensive than the PRO and gets you an X38 chipset. Just an option. I'm not sure what the PRO gets you that the IP35E doesn't, really.

CPU Cooling: Tuniq Tower 120 (read it needs modding for P35TRS) so maybe alternative? + AS5 or Coollabs Liquid Metal.
Looks like good parts. OCZ memory seems to be competing to be the new Ballistix, now that Crucial is economizing on IC's.

This (as well as the case) is probably overkill for a single GPU system. PCP&C makes a 610w supply that should be more than enough (I can attest it works on my similar system).
