E8400, First Overclock

Thread Starter
This was my first attempt at overclocking. My E8400 batch number is Q745, which I heard was a very good batch. So, I'm running my E8400 @ 3.5 with 1.2v. Is this good? Any input? Thanks,

That is very very good, see what else you can do. you're safe at 1.2v - 1.3v range, don't go any higher than that unless you have good cooling.

It passed orthos for about 5 hours, but crashed overnight. Is that a problem?

Yeah, might mean either your RAM voltage is to low or you need to bump up your Northbridge Volts. You could also try to up the CPU a tiny bit maybe 1.25 or....

1.25 lol. Thats a whole half of his extra range gone.

try 1.22 or maybe even 1.21.

If you had a TRUE 120 for cooling you would be able to do some serious ocing.

Just up your vcore to 1.3V and see how high you can push your FSB, that's a much safer approach IMO.

I would also use CoreTemp or HWMonitor to take the temps, nTunes reads motherboard temps and that's usually around 10C to 15C lower than core temps.

The Q745A chips are great! Mine did 3.2 at the lowest possible motherboard settings (1.080v actual?). To get 4.05 stable though, I had to bump vcore to 1.268v.

These chips are very tolerant of heat, they just don't handle voltage well, so try to keep it under 1.3625v.

Right now Ive been trying to keep the voltage down since I'm running stock cooling. When I run coretemp I get readings of 44, and 42 idle. Is that right?
Also, whenever I adjust the voltage through the bios, I always have to select about a 1.2652 in order to get 1.2v. Is that supposed to happen or is something messed up with my bios?

It's called vdroop... it happens... it's fine.

As far as temps, it depends on your cooler, but I show about 28c idle, 48c at load.
