HP + nvidia driver update help?

Ok, I downloaded the drivers from HP.com (have to download them from there because they are custom due to certain functions added on the HP laptops, can't get them directly from nvidia) and start to install them. I eventually get to a screen that says:

Quote:
Please review the below information about the NVIDIA IDE SW driver.

NVIDIA Storage Driver Information
----------------------------------
(WARNING - select CANCEL now if you do NOT want to install NVIDIA storage drivers)

The NVIDIA Storage driver consists of 3 components:

1) NVIDIA storage driver optimized for nForce SATA controller that will replace the driver that came with Windows.

2) A RAID controller driver which is required if SATA RAID is ENABLED in BIOS

3) RAID Manager application software

NOTE, to install OS onto SATA disks when RAID is enabled in the BIOS, you MUST do the following:

- use the "-x" option with the package .exe to extract storage driver files
- follow instructions for Windows F6 install in "IDE\\<os version>\\driver\\READMEF6.txt"

Should I install this? It doesn't let me continue to install the rest of the driver until I say OK to this, but I'm not sure if it's something I want to do.

Will definitely REP for any help, and I would also like someone to explain exactly what this is and what it's installing. Thanks!!!

(I need to install this driver update, it supposedly fixes a bug that I get sometimes that causes my lappy to bluescreen every now and then and causes problems coming back from hibernation)

It looks like you're installing the nvidia chipset drivers, not the nvidia vga drivers.
You only need those drivers if you are after some form of RAID/AHCI setup (which, being a laptop you probably dont). These drivers are usually only needed during OS install. Vista's built in Nforce drivers are more than adequate.

If you did install them, you might have windows decide to throw a hissy fit and not load correctly. It happened previously to me.

My advice would be to ignore storage drivers, and only install parts of the package you need (graphics, ethernet, etc).

Well the thing is that I can't tell it not to install this. All I can do it hit "cancel" at this part, and I don't think it installed everything else (although it may have, if I hit cancel on this part does that mean it canceled everything else too?)

And Tnb=Gir, yeah, I never said I was trying to install the vga drivers. But this update fixes a bluescreen issue I get when coming back from hibernation, so I would really like to have this update.

I got the drivers from here:

No, you do not need to install the NVIDIA IDE SW drivers. If you do, your HDD will be shown as a removeable device just like a USB device. It doesnt cause any other problems. It is annying if anything, but thats it.

To this, im really not sure. You can try installing it to see what happens (in my case it was a bluescreen per boot followed by startup repair ).

I think the ethernet drivers and what not stay in the system after you cancel, although not installed, at which point Id say install per-component through device manager (tedious but does the job) by searching the nvidia folders on the C drive.

Ok, but when I press "Cancel" does it not perform all of the other updates that the update does?

Would you recommend that I install it though? Will it hurt anything? It sounds like it has a lot to do with RAID stuff, and I won't be doing any of that in this laptop...

Bleh, I hope it installed them. I think I'll just not bother with it, if it gave you bluescreens...
