Intel Build, Suggestions Welcome

Thread Starter
Alrite I am need of a few upgrades from my current system(in sig). I will be upgrading the CPU, Motherboard, and hard drive at least. If you see any other components I could upgrade that would be a good performance boost, post your suggestion. So far this is what I have come up with.

CPU:
Q6600

Motherboard:
GIGABYTE GA-EX38-DQ or EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 or ??

Harddrive:
Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS

I need a little help choosing a motherboard, both those boards are a bit on the expensive side. I am not really certain if I ever go SLI (I would like to, but I don't really think it is worth it), so I know an Intel chipset would be the way to go then. I really want a board that can overclock really well, I have no preference for Nvidia or Intel. I doubt I will be going DDR3 for a while. If there are any MoBo's that overclock the same or better, and cost the same or less than the boards I have up there post em. Any suggest welcome .

What is the main purpose of the system and how long are you planning on running these parts before an upgrade?

If you aren't doing encoding/decoding or if you aren't editing media files, I'd go with an E8400 as they will clock higher than most Q6600s and you'll see a better performance gain from 2 higher clocked cores than 4 lower clocked ones in most applications.

For the hard drive, I've seen lots of issues with the 7200.11 drives. Quite a few arrive DOA or quit after a few months. Possibly look at a 7200.10 or a WD AAKS drive.

As for a motherboard, I'd suggest the EX38-DS4 if you want X38 or other P35 boards will give you similar overclocking results for a cheaper price. The DFI Blood Iron is a nice budget board which overclocks quite well.

Ok what do you guys think of this?

CPU: E6850

Motherboard: ASUS P5K DELUXE/WIFI-AP

HardDrive: Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS or 7200.10 ST3320620AS (x2 for raid0)

I have a question about the 7200.10 ST3320620AS, it is a Perpendicular Recording drive, would there be a performance advantage to that, or does that just make it a bit larger (320GB vs 250GB)?

According to a review I read the P5K Deluxe is the best P35 overclocking motherboard, but that is only against the 8 others that they had. If there is a better overclocking motherboard post it .

I keep doing more research and I keep getting more confused about what I want to get. I really like the E6850, I am kind of sketchy about the E8400's as they are so voltage sensitive (and they are difficult to find rite now). I am starting to lean more twords going sil again, as there would be a pretty big performance gain for most games. So now I am not sure if I should go for the 780i boards, or the 680i boards. Can someone help me figure things out

If you're not going to go SLI or Raid 0 a good board like the Gigabyte DS3L for around $80 or a Abit IP35 E for around $60 (after $30 MIR)

I am definitely going Raid 0, I am not certain about SLI yet.. Which is half the problem..
