Yes, yes you are; primarily because it's common practice for both main CPU manufacturers to disable elements of their CPUs that don't pass quality control and sell the part as something else, with a lower price tag. It's called efficiency I believe, not poverty.

Well, cheap is relative isn't it. Compared to some people, you might be considered to have a cheap CPU. Also, becuase something is expensive, it doesn't always follow that is it good, or that something cheap is bad. For example, sometimes companies wish to obtain additional market share and one method of doing this is to undercut the competition, by selling things (relatively) cheaply. In addition, companies almost always charge what the market will bare, which may have very little relation to how "good" the product is per se, but merely the perception of how good it is.

So all AMD have to do then, is keep their current performance and just reduce their price even further, so that, work done per second, per unit of currency is higher than Intel’s CPUs and you'll buy their CPUs, even if they don't out-perform Intel’s, right?

Well, only in applications that make use of those additional cores.

I'm not sure you should hate a corporate entity. It doesn't really exist in a real sense, other than in legal terms, or perhaps, representatively, through it's physical assets.

Yes, I quite agree. The last thing we need is another monopoly in the computer industry. One Micro$haft is quite enough. Lets hope AMD come through again, as they have in the past .

EDIT: Btw, can anybody sense a bit of trolling in this thread, or am I mistaken?

Highly-Annoyed

I have a Gateway GT5670 "On Hold" for $499 with:

• AMD Phenom Triple-Core 8400
• 320GB hard drive
• 3GB of DDR2 memory• Burns DVDs and CDs
• LabelFlash technology
• 15-in-1 media card reader
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE
3GB Ram Expand to 4 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)

Sounds pretty ok to me.

You could do much better with $500 than that.

I used to be an AMD fan until this kind of crap started happening.

If they're cheaper than C2Q's than thats cool but I'm still not buying one...I'd rather spend an extra $100-$200 for a really good processorinstead of a "Tri-Core"

And I'm ashamed of anyone on OCN who feels to need to get a cheap processor for any other reason than being poor...because then I sympathize.

On that same note, while everyone plays with their One-Of-Our-Cores-Don't-Work core Phenoms the rest will be enjoying Octocores
My whole processor didn't cost $200, let alone something costing $100-200 more than what I spent. If the price/performance ratio is spot-on, then good for AMD.

You could get something like mine, or better for around $450-600, granted if you build it yourself.

If you want i can see how cheap a full system would cost you on newegg

How can you make that kind of statement when you're using an E6400? I guarantee you in multithreaded apps, that "Tri-Core" would destroy your silly little proc.
