To overclock or replace?

Thread Starter
I am new to all of this so please forgive me on any dumb questions I may have asked. I have a gateway computer GT5426E, The computer is a year old so I do not want to buy a new one or a new mobo for it unless I really have too. I want to upgrade my cpu from the X2 5200+ to the X2 6400+, But gateway or my motherboard company can not tell me if my computer and BIOS will support it. And from doing a little research both cpu's are pretty much the same except for that the 5200+ is 89W compared to the 6400+ being a 125W. Also I have called and emailed a bunch of people and acccording to all of them there is no BIOS update for my board which is a ECS MCP61PM-AM with Phoenix Technologies, LTD V6.00PG dated 1/30/200. Can anyone tell me if my computer can support the 6400+ if i buy it? If not can someone help me overclock my computer to make it faster? If so I am going to need step by step help because i have never OC a computer before.
Thanks for all the Help
Computer Info:
Vista Home Premium 32Bit
X2 5200+
2GB PC2-4300 dual channel Ram(I am going to buy 4GB G.SKILL PC2-6400 when funds come in this week.)
BFG 650watt power supply
BFG 8800GT V-Card
MotherBoard (http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERB...6157Rsp2.shtml)

99.9% of company built computers cannot be overclocked. You will need to replace the motherboard, or build your own computer to OC.

As long as that CPU is the same socket it should work.

8x Q6600 has a locked multi.

(Don't mean to jack the thread.)

this is overclock.net not stockclock.net quoted from this site somewhere.
with that being said i would say get a new motherboard and overclock that
bad boy. you will get some amazing performance gains.

Edit: the Q6600 doesn't not have a locked multi btw

LoL Stockclock.net

Yeah you can't overclock Gateways/Dells/Compaqs/ETC...

I'd say get a decent P35 Board and a E21xx if budget is a problem or a good AMD system - someone else here can probably quote you a better AMD system than I could.

why in his right mind would he spend money on an intel set up when he could buy a $60 motherboard and slap it in and start ocing

i would recommend the biostar 7025 if money is an issue, if not, go with an nividia 590 chipset board like the asus crosshair.

EDIT: please click on the user cp tab at the top of the page and enter your system info. thank you

Actually there are a few high end Dells that do OC.

Back on topic...
Even an mATX OCable MB will cost you less than the CPU you seek... a bit more work though and then there is the can your PS handle it.
Both AM2 and AM2+ mATX MB are available and about $90.
Just some food for thought considering your current PC is likely an mATX format.

The will it work, perhaps not if the BIOS can't recognize it... it maay not be able to determine the multiplier.
I do recall someone else with the same question/situation whom posted here with in about the last month. Perhaps some searching and his results will answer your question.

BTW, ECS may have the answer too!

I dont think I would get the 6400+ for $170, just not worth it if you ask me.
I would spend $60-$90 on a motherboard and if your lucky enough you might get 3.2Ghz on your 5200+.

if he had $170 i woudl reccomend

CPU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116052 $80
Mobo:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=ABIT%2bIP35-E ABIT IP35-E $60

OC that E2180 to 3.0ghz + and it would probably beat any AMD dual core CPU even if the AMD had higher clocks.
