M3A, AM2+ 4200, 8600GT, problems

Hey,

SO i'm building a friend a Budget PC to play games and what not on.

specs:
ASUS M3A
AMD AM2+ 4200 (65w)
MSI 8600GT
TopPower 750 Watt PSU (quad 12v rails)
Tt Aquila Case
2GB TwinX Corsair RAM
Samsung 500GB SATA HDD
Samsung SATA DVD-RW
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

When I start the machine up, most of the time it freezes on the green loading bar and will either load after about 10 mins of waiting (the green bars move very slowly), or windows won't get to the desktop at all... It also only seems to be after drivers are installed that it stops loading normally, with a Base installation of windows no system/compnent drivers it appears to work ok (haven't tested too in-depth though)

I'm really not sure about why it does this, i've heard it's something to do with Resource assignment or something, but no solid reasons why this happens have been found by my diggings around the net's forums.

Things i have done:

Updated MB bios
Tried using 1 stick of memory in slot 1 and 2
Tried updating video drivers,
changing to an ATI X1050
Re-Installing XP Pro SP2
Re-Installing Vista 32-bit

The system still hangs at the loading screen.

After changing a piece of hardware or removing power from MB and removing MB Battery it will load without fail...

If possible, try bumping up the vcore and or vdimm. One may be slightly under volted.

This happened in XP and Vista?
Does it boot into safe mode correctly?

i haven't tried upping voltages yet.. i'll give that a whirl once i'm at home again

Yes it has done this for XP and Vista 32/64-bit, on XP it won't boot to safe mode (stops just after mup.sys loads), while in vista it will go to safe mode. I haven't gone to the point of trying safe mode with networking yet, i heard somewhere about ethernet drivers causing this... (haven't tried removing them yet as having trouble getting the system to boot up properly..

On a fresh install with no drivers th system loads fine on XP and Vista.. indicating some kind of driver fault i think... most likely a driver loaded as windows is loading up..

I would try ASUS website and/or use windows update. That is if you can get safe mode with network.

have you tried to boot with prompt (does vista even still have that?)

could help you figure out which driver is causing the problem
