Quick Question about IDE and SATA drive relations

Thread Starter
Alrighty, here's my problem. I have an old 40 gig IDE hard drive that I want to use for storing documents, maybe put my temp file over there, whatever. So, I put it in, set the jumper to the slave position, and started the computer on up. I went into the BIOS to make sure that the boot order had the SATA drive going first, but when I got to the boot order menu, the SATA drive wasn't even a choice. It's still being detected, as it shows in the Drive menu, but I can't give it priority above the IDE drive.

So, any ideas? Thanks!

PS: I may have a few questions later on that i'll just put in this thread. Thanks again.

Did you set HDD priority to the SATA drive?

How would I do that?

BIOS. Usually it is on the same screen as setting boot device. It might be called something else.

Ah, perfect! That fixed it!

Now, another question:

I've heard that you can improve performance by moving certain folders to a hard drive separate from the main drive, like frequently accessed folders, so that the computer can access them simultaneously, rather than in sequence. Will this help? If so, how do I go about doing this? Thanks!

The best practice is to use the main hard drive for the OS, apps, paging file. Use the secondary hard drive for other files..like music, movies, pictures, and stuff like that.

Well, the way I currently have it is like this:

Drive 1, SATA, two partitions.
Partition one: OS and pagefile.
Partition two: Apps
Drive 2, IDE, one partition.
Partition one: Page file

So, currently using two pagefiles. I read that it's good for more performance. So, any suggestions?

Is the pagefile the only thing on that partition?

Currently, yes. It's only a 40gig hard drive.
