In relation to benchmarks, the e8400/e8500 (i got this one), in 3DMARK06, will do approximately 600 points less under those speeds (3.6 quad vs 4.2 for the e8400) but it will beat the 3.6 quad on 3DMARK2001 (by 14k on my setup) and by quite a few k in 3DMARK03 and 3DMARK05.
It runs much cooler compared to the quad, whereas the quad on my TRUE will do 32-38 idle and 60-70 under load. The e8500 went up to 62 at the hottest while on 4.2Ghz, idling at around 39-40.

E8400 was a definite win before Q6600 price drop
Right now though I would get Q6600 just because its price/performance ratio is incredible
Having said that, for practical applications like encoding, the SSE4 on E8400 makes up for the two less cores, and its easier to code software into SSE4 than to code them for 4 cores.

So if you want future-proof, go E8400, if you want best for now, Q6600.

The 65nm quad will take some abuse and keep on kickin.

I'm sticking with my 65nm quad until 45nm hits 4Ghz consistently.

Um what?... The one thing that quad cores are much better at than dual cores like the E8400 is encoding. I can rip DVDs in handbrake so fast it ain't even funny..
