Maybe a x1600/50 will do that I suppose? Considering his FX5200 will do all low.

I'm not looking to buy new, that is way too expensive. I want to try and buy around here.

For reference, how much better is the 9550 than the FX5200?
The 9550 is a LOT better.
I had that card a couple years ago and my friend had a 5500,one day he came to my house with his PC so we play some LAN Quake 4.
the card ran the game at less than 10 fps,the 9550 ran it 20+ fps(on a crappy sempron 2300+ Socket A with higher settings).

The Radeon 9x series is the same as the GeForce 5 series. The FX5200 was the low end card of the day. So it'll be about on par with a Radeon 9000. The Radeon 9550 is the mid range version of that day. So it would be SLIGHTLY better, but not by much at all. The only thing the Radeons have going for them is that they can handle DX9 whereas the FX series struggled badly with it. Best to look into a X850 perhaps (used)? Or maybe an X1650, or a GeForce 7600GS. Those would be your best options.

The game will run piss poor on any system. Its the coding. even 3 ultras would have a hard time with how bad this game is programed.

Even on the highest settings the game doesn't look nearly as good as newer games. And I can't even get over 10FPS on the highest settings in STALKER. Were as I can play games like COD4 and UT3 maxed out at 1680x1050.

You have to remember that thats with a dual core, 2gb of ram, so basically what you see is nearly double what you'll end up getting.

And the 9550 is about as powerful as my old 6200TC, which is to say not at all, you won't be able to play any games really at 1280x1024.

Try something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102081

or an x1650 if you can find it, and always check for any used deals.

Well my old MSI Radeon 95550 could do a 100% overclock on the core which basically turned the card into a 9700Pro so hopefully he can do the same, it definitely gave me a decent performance boost.

Ok, well what about medium in STALKER? I just want him to be able to run decent (fairly recent) games like CSS and Garry's Mod, possibly COD4.

Ok, I'll be looking out for a x1600 or x1500 series.

He has an old Dell, and I would rather not mess with it.

get a 9800 pro. it's a much better card and shouldn't cost you more than $50. i sold mine for about that a while back. i could play most newer games - never tried cod4 or css or stalker though. that might be asking a bit much.
