Black Knight: SkullTrail Upgrade Picture Thread - Page 6

Yeah I would def buy one of those cases too...
You'd probably have to go straight to the manufacturer to get them at a reasonable price.
Almost done...

Yeah I gotta update fer ya

Them dang Cat Lice Ate pint tree driverz is CRAP yo.

Causes instability in mah puter.

This morning the screen was a mess o strips n stripes...lost mah whole WU..

Ding Dong.

Here are some pointers from the "Harsh Reviewest" Slots on SkullTrail start one slot down from the case slots: you only get 6 slots.

PCIe slots are so close together dual slot cards will not get ventilation: count on LC if you are going to use this board for Multi SLI of Xfire.

Bottom PCIe slot is only one case slot so forget about running a dual slotter in the bottom unless you have one of the new ten slot cases.

Dual Slot cards in the top two slots totally cover the intake on the SB so count on trouble there (instability?)

SB cooler could be upgraded but with what? There are no Skulltrail specific coolers yet.

Overclocking Xeons? Yeah right. After many many reboots I have managed to get 7.5 x 393 max. I can get a POST at 400 but not load to Windows. Voltage does not help: it actually hurts.

Rebooting the Skulltrail is a tedious affair. Typical scenario. Power up wait for controller detections wait for more controller detections wait for splash screen more controller detections then press F2 and enter BIOS. Adjust parameter and F10 then press Y reboot...

At this point 9 times out of ten you will get three beeps and no POST. Power down from PSU wait 10-15 seconds Repower from PSU and system will boot without pressing PWR SW...wait for detections detections detections select OS etc etc etc.

This adds a good 30-40 seconds per reboot... When you are loooking for a certain setting to work this can be very annoying...

What else? No way I can see to adjust Memory speed in BIOS...could be missing something.

You can adjust Bus speed for PCIe and PCI and for the CPU host controller...but apparently not for RAM???

OoooooKay.

Here's my impression: if you are a rich n00b you will need to pay some geek to tweak this for you...no way is a n00b going to get the hang of this board and OC it.

If you are a poor Geek you will never be able to afford this board: but take heart: your P5K and E8400 will out game it all day long...unless the Rich N00b also bought the $3300 in CPUs the board must have to be worth a damn.

Bottom line: STAY AWAY unless you are a well-heeled PC enthusiast that is willing to spend whatever it takes to be oh so Uber....

I mean I could buy the CPUs...but there is a point were I feel a bit chapped around the sphincter by the whole affair.

Why should it take $3300 in CPUs, $650 in board, $250 in RAM to equal $1200 in CPU, $300 in Board, $100 in RAM?

The comparison I draw is the QX9650 X38 DDR2 scenario many of us have chosen to afford.

That can pull 20K with good cards

I am still trying to break 18K with the SkullTrail at max OC and two $375 CPUs...

Now this board was meant to work with QX9775 CPUs...but considering Nehalem is around the corner and not compatible with s771 why bother? Who wants to buy $3300 worth of obsolete CPUs? If I spend that kind of cake it will be on Nehalem..not a glorified Xeon...

Rep for the "no-holds-barred" comments.

This may prove to be a "tear-saver" for some that slave and save to traverse the SkullTrail.

Well take the typical reviewer addicted to the gravy train of free hardware: they Receive $5000 in gear to test: if they say anything HONEST about it besides posting outrageous benchmarks they can kiss the gravy train goodbye.

ROFLCOPTER. Well I'm glad you like the setup... i just sold an HTPC to a guy who has one of the QX977X series chips from a buddy. it's an ES it seems, but he doesn't understand what it is. I talked it up and he offered it to me for 400... I am tempted, but honestly, he will not get it in his head as to what it is worth. Feeling bad about it, but curious as well. Dunno if I want to spend 4 bills on an ES model either...
